It is like you have never played the game, if you are defending and have an attacker next to you at LB with a centre back in a decent position in the middle you concentrate on not allowing the attacker to get in front of you in case there is a cross/shot or deflection.
You say about predicting where the shot goes. As I said before he doesn't need to, he just needs to position himself well to defend the ack post and be aware of the attacker behind him. Even if he did want to predict where the ball would go it is a shot across goal, there are only 2 places it is likely to go. The most obvious is the back post via the momentum of the shot off the keeper or off the far post. The second most likely place is the middle if the keeper gets more of a hand to it but De Ligt is relatively well positioned for that.
