I don't like the one striker formations because you always have one against two or three in the box.
So Giovinco and Del Piero up front who drive the defense crazy, make room for Amauri and keep their fullbacks under pressure, Diego to fall back and give them the ball and play more central.
Actually this formation is less attacking and more control than 4231. In 4231 we have four players who just attack and a hole behind them. Diego should fill this hole, he has the vision and skill to do so. He doesn't need to be behind every attack when we have Del Piero and Giovinco, experience and pace who already showed how great they can play together.
I just don't see how it would work.

Both wings would be horribly exposed and the same problems with handling counter attacks would be there as there was with the 4-2-3-1.

I thought about the possibility of playing Diego slightly deeper early in the season, but decided it would probably not be of sufficicient beniefit to other players or the team to justify limiting in that way.

How would it be easier to close down the opposition, Douchan?

It's the same team as the 4-2-3-1 used before, but Del Piero in for Camoranesi.
Fullbacks would play a bit more forward, making it easier for Marchisio and Poulsen to fill back and have someone next to them, width. Diego would be there to pick up the ball and make something out of nothing, but this time with someone who can do something actually, Del Piero and Giovinco. And not like in 4-3-1-2 where it's everything down on his shoulders.

I think id go with:

SAli-Can-God-Grosso

Marchisio-melo-poulsen-gio

Diego
Amauri

Or maybe
Marchiso-Melo-Poulsen
Diego
DP
Amauri

Milans weakness lies mostly with the wing backs. If they play Abate - Antonini it is more positioning than speed, which a triangle of Amauri-DP-Diego should be able to exploit. I'd go with Gio instead of DP if they play Zambrotta/Kaladze, to get some speed in there. I'd use Treze instead of Amauri if possible.

This game is not impossible, maybe tell Melo to man mark Ronaldinho - Then he'd know what to do and possible take away their best weapon. Well, at least the best in the games i've seen. Milan has been very bad when he has played bad.

They can't exposed that much, it's not like we have Dani Alves on the side and only Legro back.

Grygera doesn't even go up front.
When we played 4-2-3-1 we got butchered on the counter attacks and the defence was continually left exposed because the midfield was pushing too far up the pitch and leaving to many spacing.

I fail to see how this formation would solve that.

The important thing in this game is to stay compact and organised.

I would make it into a midfield scrap and see if we can't be the team that nicks a goal.

This isn't the time to try and play open and expansive football and give Milan's players heaps of time and space on the ball.

You can talk and analyze forever, but when I saw their spirit last night and how they were stepping the game up(even in 75 min. when leading 5-1 they were chasing Genoa players like hell), I know that we are going to get trampled down! Leonardo was sending kisses to the crowd and all Ciro is getting is whistles...These are the kind of games that one can make cash from...

Scratch Trez from the line-ups. The dude is out for 40 days.

Lets hope Amauri will show the same performance he had the last time we played Milan in Torino.

Ciro, if you have at least one testicle, play Gio:

Manninger

Grygera - Canna - Chiellini - Grosso

Sali - Poulsen - Melo - Giovinco

-----Diego
----------------Amauri

The best possible line-up IMO now after Trezi is confirmed absent:

Manni
Grygera----Canna----Chellini------Grosso

Poupou----Melo----Marchisio

Diego-----Seba

Amauri

4-3-2-1

Swap Poulsen with Marchisio.
Also Amuari will have trouble getting through Milan defense all by himself.

Again, amuari can't do it by himself in the box.

I'm pretty confident that this will be the team (It's not what I want).

Manninger

Grygera - Cannavaro - Chiellini - Grosso

Salihamidizic - Poulsen - Melo - Marchisio

Diego - Amauri
