I've been following Giovinco since his Empoli time. He has some eye candy techniques but he is not decisive. If you say he doesn't play because he can't "defend", well, it's not like Balotelli, Pato and Jovetic "defend".
Balotelli already played a bigger part than Giovinco last year when Casiraghi said these words about Azzurri? It's that simple. Players like Balotelli and Pato impressed in the limited time so they got more playing time in the process. In their first year, their playing was no more than that of Giovinco.
Giovinco the best player in the 2009 U-21 Euro? That's what some medias said and what some fans thought (some of who were impressed by some of Giovinco's eye-candy tricks). Creative kind of players draw attention. But tell me, what end products has Giovinco contributed to the team? In Olympics he scored a spectacular goal (I gave credit to that) in the match against Honduras (It's just Honduras...) and then he was largely disappointed. In Euro-21 he contributed 2 assists and one of which was mainly credit of Balotelli's great long shot. In Toulon, he scored 2 goals, one was a free-kick and another one was just pure luck (both goals were scored on one match against Coste d'ivoire). In the match against Japan U-23, Morimoto had a better match than him. Italy won by penalty. In the final against Chile, Italy won 1-0 by Olvaldo's goal after Giovinco was subtituted. He won the MVP because he was the only attacking star in the champion team Italy. Then again there weren't really stars and strong teams in that Toulon.
In the end, he just lacks end products. He scored no more than 4 goals in 30 matches in the Italian U-21 as a starter. He played in Empoli 35 matches and had 3-4 assists...
I follow the youth team very closely. Actually I've watched every match of the U-21 Azzurrini, including the qualification. They never impressed me in the attack. Other than winning teams like Albania by great scores, they draw 0-0 1-1 with teams like Greece, Croatia. Actually their best win against a decent team was when Giovinco was suspended and Balotelli scored two goals and they won Israel by 3-1. This team was decent and went in the semi-final because they had a good defense. The problem is players like Motta, Criscito, Marchisio were not the kind of players that drew attention because they are not "creative", eye-candy like. But they completed their tasks well and are the better ones compred to other players of ther age in their respective positions. In Giovinco's case, assists and goals are his obligations, a player of his posiction and characteristics should have more end products than what he produced. I can name quite some players who are better than him of his characteristics and of his age.
If all these things doesn't prove that he's good enough to start in a team where players like grygera, molinaro, grosso, and others are playing week in week out then thats simply a joke.
In their respective postions and characteristics, I doubt what Giovinco has done as an attacking force was better than that of Grosso as a LB.
As for Giovinco's Juve performances, I've watched most of the Juve matches. He only played well in 4 matches, against Bologna, against Catania, against Catania in Copa Italia last season, against Sampdoria this season. So far he has proved that he is a useful sub, but not good enough to start. Also everytime he played well as a sub, the coaches (Ranieri, Ferrara) all tried to start him and he disappointed again (and usually not once, but constantly) and the coaches had to put him again as a sub. How does he deserve a starting spot anyway it's not like he hasn't been given any.
