Giovinco Plays Down 'New Del Piero’ Tag

Young Empoli starlet Sebastian Giovinco has said it is his dream to star for Juventus but has distanced himself from comparisons to Alessandro Del Piero.

Giovinco is owned by Juventus but was loaned out to Empoli this summer in order to gain some first-team experience. The Italy Under-21 international is rightly regarded as one of the most exciting young talents in European football.

Blessed with some quite incredible dribbling skills and technique, former 1982 World Cup hero Dino Zoff recently stated that Giovinco had more fantasy than Del Piero.

“Mamma Mia!,” Giovinco exclaimed when told of the comparison.

“What a responsibility that is after all that Del Piero has done for Juventus. It seems impossible for me to ever repeat what he has done. However I like the challenge of trying to do so.

“My objective at the moment is to play as much as possible, to grow and get better and better. Juventus found the right solution in sending me to Empoli. I am lucky – Empoli is an excellent place for me to build up my experience.

“For the moment all I am thinking of is doing well here. However it is obvious that my dream is to eventually be able to wear the Juventus shirt.”

Giovinco scored his first ever Serie A goal on Sunday during Empoli’s 3-1 win against Palermo.

You know Fenerbahce's captain Alex? I think Giovinco is going to be smth like him, just a little more agile and better of course.

Who Is Italy’s Most Promising Youngster? Italy and Serie A are never short of promising youngsters. However out of the current crop of hot prospects, who is destined for the top? Goal.com wants to know what you think. Here are five suggestions…

Who Is Italy’s Most Promising Youngster?

1) Sebastian Giovinco (Empoli)

The 20-year-old attacking-midfielder is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in Europe. Skilful, fast, with great vision and technical ability, many have labelled Giovinco as the 'Italian Messi’. Giovinco is on loan at Empoli from Juventus but many believe he is the Bianconeri’s natural heir to Alessandro Del Piero.

2) Giuseppe Rossi (Villareal)

Rossi has made an outstanding start to his La Liga career with four goals in his first five games. Signed from Manchester United in the summer, having come through the famed youth system at Parma, Rossi has a beautiful left-foot and is a deadly finisher. Short and nimble, with excellent awareness, many have likened Rossi’s style to ex-Lazio legend Giuseppe Signori.

3) Alberto Aquilani (Roma)

It seems only injuries can stop this brilliant midfielder from becoming an Azzurri regular in the future. Aquilani is a complete midfielder, he can pass, tackle, run and as Palermo and Siena found out in the first two weeks of the season, he has a brilliant long-shot with both feet. Has just been ruled out for two months but don’t bet against the 23-year-old returning better than ever.

4) Alessandro Rosina (Torino)

Rosinaldo is a defender’s nightmare – Fast, skilful, both-footed – the player is surely the long-term replacement for Mauro Camoranesi on the right-hand side of Italy’s midfield. Last season he virtually single-handedly kept Torino in Serie A with his nine goals but his start to the new campaign has been complicated by a contract dispute. If Rosina wants to fulfil his undoubted talent, then he has to move to a big club. Milan have been mooted as a possible destination and it could be the perfect solution for both club and player.

5) Ezequiel Lavezzi (Napoli)

Not since the 1980s have the Napoli fans been so excited about a player. That player was Diego Maradona – the greatest footballer of all time. After Lavezzi’s stunning start to his Partenopei career, the comparisons between the two Argentineans have inevitably started. Both share incredible technical ability, skill and pace but Lavezzi probably has a more realistic likeness to Manchester United’s Carlos Tevez. Nevertheless Lavezzi is certainly one for the future.
