Ok Andy here is my reply to your face covering question:
First of all we were discussing faith, I just want to establish what faith means (at least to me). To me faith is your belief in a higer power, what you believe in Him, and why you believe in Him. In Islam there are 6 Pillars of faith and 5 Pillars of Islam. The faith pillars are the belief in God, his angels, his books, his prophets, judgment day, and fate good and bad. As for the 5 Pillars of Islam, they are result of faith and they are saying Al-Shahada, Praying 5 times a day, Zakat or alms, fasting Ramadan, and Pilgrimige...How is that for a crash course in Islam

??
Anyways, my point is that a woman covering her face is not part of faith but rather a result of faith. Not doing it will not contradict her faith, and she would still be a muslim. As a matter of fact not abiding by anything else but the mentioned pillars will not result in loosing faith.
As I mentioned before covering a woman's face is not a must in Islam. It is either an iniative a woman takes or a result of tradition. In fact when a woman is doing pilgramage she should NOT cover her face and palms.
But the problem is that lots of people think that us men coerce women into covering themselves up, which is totally not true. Sure there are some cases where coersion is practised but they are exceptions. In fact most Muslim women ,if not all, you encounter in USA cover up because of their belief that it is the right thing to do so. I dont think that they could be coerced in a free country like the USA. So if they do it on their own and nobody is coercing them , what is the problem it is a free country right?
Also what makes your (American) point of reference the right one? I mean what makes a woman revealing her breasts in public a no-no and illegal as a point of reference of whats right?
Finally Andy, Europe and America were not much different than us 100 or so years ago right? Women were expected to dress decently in public. The circumstances that the West went through in the 20th century (World War 1 and 2) 'liberalized" women and resulted in them shedding off a few pound of cloth!
Anyways I dont want to blabber and make my reply lengthy (I know I already did). So here are some reasons why women are required to cover:
1- Doing so would dramatically reduce the amount of adultry and affairs, which would ultimatly reduce the amount of divorce and illegimate children, which would sabotage the fabric of society.
2-Doing so would prevent society from "objectifiying women", which many women in the west are complaining from.
These are the reasons I could think of now...but I bet there are more...I could ask around...I got another class now:fero: ...so I gotta run....Hope it helps
