I'm against same sex marriages. Yeah you read that right. In fact I'm extremely intolerant about this. First of all I don't like the marriage as an institute. It came in handy hundreds of years ago, but the philosophy behind it all isn't of all that much use nowadays IMO. As for same sex marriages: all they do in my eyes is giving religion a kick in the balls. Now I know I'm usually a big fan of that particular move, but let's be fair, what good does it serve? If two gay men love each other why insult a community by marrying? No matter how you twist it, marriage involves religion and most religions aren't too fond of homosexuality. That's why it's beyond me why gay men would want to commit a religious act anyway.

Marriage is by no means a religious act only. In fact, dont know how it's in other parts of the world but I presume it's very much the same, but here a religious marriage has no legal consequences. It's recognized by state only after you've conducted a state marriage.

I'm more than aware of the fact marriage has it's legal consequences these days, but I'm sure you all know it used to be religious. I'm not against the legal contract, I'm just against the ceremony and the way people call it. I'm also not too sure about gay men adopting children, unless it's proven it doesn't harm a child's youth. I know I wouldn't have liked to have two gay fathers though, but maybe that's just me.
Well I'm not adopting either but that's not the point. I wouldn't mind the abolition of the concept of marriage but it would take a revision of just about every aspect of the law (particularly the financial arrangements in the nation, tax systems etc). In order to take that step, a society needs to evolve further than most Western European societies have at this point, and some big thinker needs to come up with a substitute or alternative.
The alternatives that currently exist don't suffice and as long as marriage still forms a cornerstone of modern society, it should be open to different and same sex couples.

I'm not sure what it's like in Belgium, but there are contracts that ressemble a normal marriages in many ways. You may be right though as a lot of discussing still needs to be done about this point. As for now same sex marriages are allowed in Belgium and I guess that, by the lack of a better alternative, that's currently the way it should be.
Ja, ook toegankelijk voor hetero- en homokoppels. Samenlevingscontracten zijn in basis hetzelfde als een huwelijk maar in essentie ook weer niet. Bijvoorbeeld bij kwesties als adopties telt een huwelijk voor veel, veel meer. Noem het een sociologische gevoelswaarde nog niet aan evolutie onderhevig geweest, feit is dat ze nog bestaat...

Religious? Not to defend the club of which I am a member, but the general social concepts behind marriage well pre-date anything of what you might say resembles any modern religion.
While it is true that many religions have incorporated marriage within their dogmatic repertoire, those religions co-opted it and (in some way) took credit for it as their own.
So suggesting that marriage is merely a religious invention is horse crap. It's like a religion suggesting that it invented the human creation mythos.

monogamy doesn't equate marriage, the social contract which binds both parties to certain rights and duties was indeed created/regulated by religion for it cancelled the physical advantage of men through the concept of invisible forces reigning over both. As i evolved it took on a social role as it strenghtened ties between extended families(or not "in-laws") and economically it made for a more productive society. How exactly does gay marriage apply to either in America is yet to be seen. We are simply not ready tbh
