I didn't say Houllier's opinion was more relevant than anybody. I just found what he said to be amusing and true.

there isnt but playing almeria on a random weekend is not the same as playing on the biggest stage of them all. All things considered canna, who i personally cannot stand, deserved it.

Wait wait, i didn't say Cannavaro didnt have a better season than Zidane. Where did you get that from? Zidane wasn't even that good for Real in his last season. I said Zidane had a better World Cup, which he did. The best player in the world that year was Ronaldinho imo, he was amazing that year for Barcelona, but had a poor World Cup. Still he was much more consistent than both Zidane and Cannavaro.

Zidane was out for 2 of the group games anyway right? so he really only had a good world cup after the group stages... France barely made it out of the group. I think Canna or Buffon had an overall better tournament but Zidane was awesome too.

It doesn't matter if they were 'instructed' or not, because no one is voting based on a couple of months of a new season. It's not even that, if you think about when the shortlists are made. In 2009 the shortlist was revealed on 18th October, now say it took them 2 weeks to produce that shortlist (very generous from me here I think ), you are talking about the start of October, most probably going into September, at that point clubs have played 3-6 games.
