This incident is custom made for the French, though. They love unsettled melodrama. Smoke your Gitanes, quote Sartes and Camus, and go on strike for a day just for show so you can succumb later.

It's the French way, after all.

lol, the media maybe love all the drama, but the French? Hell no! The ones I know just want that to end as soon as possible. However, the French deserve the stereotype that describe them as whiner; they are all bashing this team (overdone it too) and a lot of them wish that the majority of the players do not play anymore for their national team. But, it's still understandable.

Here's some other news. Sarkozy is mad too (It was some days ago, though), and, hell, he even talks about it in a conference:

He's saying that what is going on with Anelka is unforgivable.

This was reported in a Frenc newspaper

The problems and friction in the French team are down to a split over one man: Yoann Gourcuff.

Gourcuff comes from a privileged family. He is smart and he is respectful - but he is also still a shy little boy. In his spare time he listens to music, watches films and plays his video game systems. He is, in his own words, a little nerdy.

In a French squad that places more value on how much money you have in your bank account, and what girl is on your arm, Gourcuff doesn't fit.

One incident occurred shortly before the World Cup. Franck Ribery and Sidney Govou had organised a night out at well known gentleman's club in Paris. Several players, including Gourcuff decided to stay home. When Ribery heard about this he immediately confronted Gourcuff and asked 'does your mother not allow you to go, you homosexual slur'

This is one of many incidents.

Ribery is the main instigator in the bullying, however he is far from alone. On the pitch, Gourcuff plays within himself. Scared because he fears the verbal retribution he will receive after the match from his tormentors.

In the squad, Gourcuff can count on only 4 real allies. His best friend Hugo Lloris, his teammate Jeremy Toulalan, elder statesmen Thierry Henry and captain and the glue that holds the team very loosely together, Patrice Evra.

When Raymond Domonech bowed to player pressure and dropped Gourcuff for France's second group match, that was the catalyst for the situation in which we now find ourselves.

Some of the reaction by French newspapers after the team refused to train

guardian.co.uk
Monday 21 June 2010

•Players heavily criticised after refusing to train yesterday
• 'This band of children has no limit, no sense of duty'

The French media have heaped scorn and derision on the national team after the players boycotted a training session yesterday in protest against the expulsion of Nicolas Anelka after the Chelsea striker insulted the France coach, Raymond Domenech. France face the hosts, South Africa, tomorrow in a match they must win to stand any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages of the World Cup.

L'Equipe

"A rebellion? No, a caprice. A strike? No, cowardliness. Don't deceive yourself. The republican solidarity that our players showed the world yesterday is an illusion.

"The [football federation] has created a farce; it's froth, a stink bomb that keeps on exploding.

"Patrice Evra has once and for all shown that he has muddled up the role of captain with that of a gang leader. Raymond Domenech, by lending a hand to this masquerade and reading out himself the players' statement, has missed his final opportunity to show some style and courage."

Le Parisien

"Everyday, Les Bleus push back the frontiers of the unacceptable. This band of spoilt children, left free to do what they like by their entire hierarchy, has no limit, no sense of duty so close to the match against South Africa.

"To have the worst football team at the World Cup was already unbearable. To also have the most stupid is intolerable … The mutiny at Knysna will forever remain the Waterloo of French football."

Le Figaro

"It is collective suicide … the French team has heaped ridicule on itself in front of the whole world yesterday at Knysna. The 'field of dreams' became the set of a living nightmare. It was almost hallucinatory. This is a psychodrama that will go down in the history of the World Cup. The French team has been reduced to ashes."

Libération

"We take them to be role models for kids who have lost their way in life, but in reality they are just bling-bling traders for a sport which yesterday lost a lot of credit in France."

Le Progrès de Lyon

"They should have contented themselves with being bad on the pitch and arrogant off it as they already have been for a few years. Honestly, they amaze us. No doubt they can do even worse."

Les Dernières Nouvelles d'Alsace

"In a certain way France has already made a success of the 2010 World Cup. History will remember only two teams from this World Cup: that of the winning country and also perhaps France. Les Bleus have shown great mastery of a worldwide scandal. A triumph!"

Vosges Matin

"Too much is too much! The spectacle made by this team of multimillionaires is a disgrace to all French people."

La République Du Centre

"We are no longer in the presence of nasty brats … but of professional sportsmen not worthy of wearing the French national colours."

France Soir

"Clearly nothing can be expected of Les Bleus. Their achievements are shameful: France is the laughing stock of the world."

No offence, but Ribery is right here. Gourcuff is being a pussy and it's detrimental to the team. He should have gone.

Other than that I think Gourcuff is a much nicer person than Ribery and I've always quite liked him. I'm sure this wasn't a particularly important incident. Gourcuff shouldn't have been dropped for the second game IMO anyway.

Why? If he isn't going to enjoy himself than why go and kill the buzz?

If I was in Ribery's position I wouldn't want someone to come who didn't want to be there.
Because it's a team event. You do those things. You have fun. Not going is just not good for anyone.

PLASTIC SURGEON.

Maybe, but still it is unprofessional and childish for a player at Ribery's level to be acting that way. He should be leading by example not treating one of the younger players like sh*t.

No offence to you, but I think you are wrong. Gourcuff is entitled to go to this party or not, you can't force him, and this party at a Gentlemen club is not the x-factor to the team identity. This Frecnh team lacks leadership, there are plenty of clans within the team and are all behaving like little spoiled kids. Evra being stupid instead of answering the qestions he decided to say we want to find the traitor and then wasn't man enough to read the team statement, and Domenech did it instead. Domenech biggest mistake is not taking somebody with strong leadership. Having Evra as a captain is big disaster, and they way he is behaving is disgraceful and shambolic. As for Gourcuff, he is entitled to do whatever he wants, as long as he trains hard, and go on the pitch and gives it all. when you work at a specific job, you don't have to best buddy with everybody you work with. You go to the job, and do what you have to do, then if you want to hang out or not with your work mate is up to you, as long as you do you job. also going our or not with your work mate should have nothing to do with the job.

No, but neither can Gourcuff IMO. It was not smart. Ribery's an ass though. I wonder what Govou has to say about it all. My roommate from Bologna is from Lyon and he has talked with Govou on several occasions and says Govou's actually quite polite.

It has got everything to do with your job if your job is building a team.

it's quite obvious you never played a team sport or were in a "team"; and why should you believe the words of an agent(the media) outside what happened rather than one(evra) who was inside. The french need to stop their moaning and actually try to listen to what these players are trying to say, and i agree with them in that the "vestiaire" is a sanctuary and whoever broke the rules of that sanctuary is the real devil in this story.
