The no statute of limitations in combination with the reverse burden of proof (asking the defendant to prove the legality of funds instead of the prosecutor proving that they came from a specific predicate offense) only works as long as it is reasonable. Going back 30 or 50 years, considering that in many countries you're not even obliged to hold them that long, would not be reasonable unless the prosecutor has something very concrete.

It's not so much a legal matter, the law is there, so it's a matter of public opinion/political. If uk enforces the very loose laws of money laundering or wire fraud on abramovich, public opinion will be all for it and that's that. I actually see same eventually happening to arabs as well, saudis and such.

As some expert în my country said, Russia power is based on them having nukes.
If they launch them, then they have nothing.
And having nothing means leveling Russia to the ground even if Europe goes with it.
At this point putler should be considered a terrorist and as you all know you can't bargain with terrorists so in case of nukes, the west should maintain an eye for an eye kind of deal.
It should be made clear to putler that this kind blackmail doesn't work anymore.

As for the assets of putler cronies, if putler doesn't want to pay for war destruction in Ukraine, then his oligarchs money is going to go there.

Of the over 2k nukes Russia and U.S possess it's comical to think more than a dozen would even be needed.
Nukes today have about 2k-3k times more destruction power than Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and those
two bombs left about 100k dead and 100k injured. If Putin uses nukes in Ukraine there is no way he can control the fallout in fact it will harm Russia as well...not to mention sanctions and the economical impact for years to come which will set ruskis back 500 years.
I think putinka knows he can't touch nukes and i think that CIA knows that too, what they tell the public is another matter.

Its hard to ascertain. But we will see if the current trajectory continues. It looks like they cant win, even with the modified targets. What happens once it becomes apparent? Either Putin is offered an off-ramp in negotiations, EU gets to keep buying cheap gas and the economic crisis is averted or Russia escalates, no? Im not a military expert, but it looks like theyre running out of conventional means of escalation.
