China will do something by doing nothing.
Unlikely they fully support Russia, imo. Given how they see its a failing state. More likely they remain neutral, supporting Russia by using a veto or using silence while not openly or vocally supporting Russia because they know its politically and economically suicide.
Russia being in such dire straits economically for the last 10-15 years truly has made them a worthless ally for China. Russia is a loud barking dog with very little strength except an old military. And yet they are China's really only ally so China must maintain the facade.
China has a rather enviable position in that they are the only country that's really able to still trade with the world and Russia.
Taiwan parallels aside though, like I'd trust China in a trust fall if I were Russia.
Right now, Western countries are happy to accept all Ukranian refugees. War on your doorstep has that effect.
In the long run, I'm not so sure.
But that wasn't my point. I was just wondering how the "don't take refugees" stance works in reality. Hell, it's a stance I don't entirely disagree with, but I just don't see how it is realistic.
Refugees are ok until they scale... that's the main trouble. And Ukraine is just the beginning of what will be a bigger and more regular global occurrence.
Here in Portugal, Ukrainians were our second biggest foreign population before all this. And the inside joke here is that you never want a Portuguese person building or doing construction on your home... you want Ukrainians.
In the long run I hope the West help Ukraine rebuild and those refugees can return home.
There's going to be so much opportunity to rebuild there.
