Former Inter ace Ronaldo has been named as the European Footballer of the Year for the second time.

The Real Madrid star has been awarded the Golden Ball by the ‘France Football’ publication despite playing less than 30 competitive games in 2002.

The Brazilian, who ended the World Cup as the tournament top scorer with eight goals, finished ahead of club and international teammate Roberto Carlos and Bayern Munich ‘keeper Oliver Kahn.

Juventus’ Alessandro Del Piero was the highest placed Italian as he came in 10th position.

Ronaldo, who turned his back on Inter this summer after they nurtured him back to fitness, becomes the eighth player to win the prize more than once after his victory in 1997.

He follows in the footsteps of men such as former Juventus legend Michel Platini, Milan’s Marco Van Basten and Dutch master Johan Cruyff. They all won the Golden Ball on three occasions.

Last year’s winner was Liverpool and England striker Michael Owen.

forget about henry. trezeguet should be at least in the top 5. no kidding here!

24 goals in the serie A (top goal scorer). serie A player of the year.
scored 8 goals in the CL, and if i remember correct from 11 mathces.

if you ask me, it's too much world cup here.

Totaly agree with you about Trezeguet :thumb:

About Ronaldo... what to say... he scored 8 goals in the WC, and that's amazing, but weare he was all the rest of the year?
I think Roberto Carlos deserved it... :(

I don't understand why Vieri isn't there too... Actually he was the second topscorer of serie A last season and he's the first now with 12 goals in 11 matchs, he is the Italian player of the year and in the WC, also if Italy sucked, he was the only one who did good, scoring 4 goals... 4 goals isn't 8 but isn't bad too...

Raul and Ronaldinho deserved a better position too IMO.

This is so much shite. Ronaldo didn't even play half the season, while players like Trez,DP,Ballack,Aimar, etc toiled long and hard throughout the year. Good to see that DP was the highest of the Italians, but how Trezeguet and Aimar couldn't even make the list is beyond me.

I don't know....but Real wouldn't kick him out. "Oh, He's too expensive" says Perez :D
    I don't like him joining Real....that's for sure ;)

I personally think Ballack should have won the award. He led his team to the final of the CL and had a terrific WC.

Ironically, Real splashing out on Ronaldo probably had a lot to do with him winning that award.

Btw I read on norwegian teletext last night (haven't found the same story online) that Ronaldo commented on winning saying he deserved it (again) and that Beckham and him are players from another planet..
