Former Inter ace Ronaldo has been named as the European Footballer of the Year for the second time.
The Real Madrid star has been awarded the Golden Ball by the ‘France Football’ publication despite playing less than 30 competitive games in 2002.
The Brazilian, who ended the World Cup as the tournament top scorer with eight goals, finished ahead of club and international teammate Roberto Carlos and Bayern Munich ‘keeper Oliver Kahn.
Juventus’ Alessandro Del Piero was the highest placed Italian as he came in 10th position.
Ronaldo, who turned his back on Inter this summer after they nurtured him back to fitness, becomes the eighth player to win the prize more than once after his victory in 1997.
He follows in the footsteps of men such as former Juventus legend Michel Platini, Milan’s Marco Van Basten and Dutch master Johan Cruyff. They all won the Golden Ball on three occasions.
Last year’s winner was Liverpool and England striker Michael Owen.
