I used to listen rock a lot as a teen, but I have never heard about most of bands mentioned on here.

Rammstein, Rage Against the Machine, Marilyn Manson, Slipknot, SOAD, Pearl Jam were my favorites.

...and I don't even like Portishead. That's just a matter of personal preference though. I've never really liked their sound. I'd place an album like Of Montreal's 2007 Hissing Fauna Are You the Destroyer far above it. Of Montreal, from Satanic Panic in the Attic(04) to Skeletal Lamping(08), is to me the most interesting band of the era, as far as sound goes. And I cannot think of a better, or at the very least, more interesting lyricist than Kevin Barnes. But Portishead and Of Montreal are so far apart in the musical world, that comparing the two is rather pointless.

But, most of what I listen to post-2000 wouldn't probably fit into the rock genre. A bit of it, yes, not the majority.

This girl i used to go out with 10 years ago or so, loved Indie music. I used to annoy the shit out of her about how it was crap. I couldn't stand listening to Arcade Fire anymore. Had to dump the bitch.

I swear, though, i tried to like it. I got bored listening to Neon Bible. I'm open minded as fuck but Indie, especially if it's popish, isn't really my cup of tea.

And it makes me beyond mad when some "critics" try to compare it to Ok Computer. They do the same to that Flaming Lips album with the robot.

Are you kidding me? One is a masterpiece. Changed rock history. Not trying to label but it is the Dark Side of The Moon of it's generation in terms of production, chord structures and complexity. Fuck no.

I swear, though, i tried to like it. I got bored listening to Neon Bible. I'm open minded as $#@! but Indie, especially if it's popish, isn't really my cup of tea.

I pretty much despise everything by Arcade Fire after the first album Funeral. Neon Bible was so terrible.

I get the dislike, especially of the popish side of Indie. It's overdone, and there are way too many bands doing the exact same thing, same formula, and all that. It's interesting to see how music evolves and trying to figure out, what, within a genre like that is actually worth listening to, and won't just drive you insane after 3rd time listening to it.

Some songs that ive been playing a lot recently.

I was super into punk as a teen, and loved the Misfits. That song and two others, Scream and Where Eagles Dare were my favourites at the time.


My favourite punk rock album of all time is still Entertainment by Gang of Four. So brilliant. Especially this song.


The question is, the album version above, or the EP version from a year earlier. I'm partial to the slower pace and key of the EP version, but like the altered lyrics and bass fills of the Album version better. Pretty even though. With the album version slightly better imo. Here's the EP version anyways.

Love me some Elliott Smith. Either/or has to be the most depressing album in history right next to Closer.

Also he fucking guy had such the oddest death ever. How can someone stab himself twice in the chest? You'd thought the pain from the first stabbing would make you lose consciousness or even just the strength to stab you again.

To me it was another Kurt Cobain case, his girl must have something to do with it.

Can't believe this is turning 20 years old in 2 months. I had heard Creep before but this was what got me into the band in 95'. It's funny how many bands tried to sound like it afterwards, copycats were everywhere.

An interesting curiosity; It is said that Fake Plastic Trees was written after seeing a Jeff Buckley concert.

Creep was the second song I heard by Radiohead. The first was Stop Whispering. I was 9 when Pablo Honey came out. My sister had the CD.

It's funny that you have mentioned both Radiohead Creep and Portishead in here. My current girlfriend does acoustic covers of both Creep and Sour Times at most of her shows, alongside some original stuff.

Indie is really such a vague term that encompasses such a massive array of genres now, it's really just a sound, a style, and more refers to music (of any sort) that a certain type of people listen to. I'd much prefer music being labelled as what it is. Like you say: synthpop; electropop; chillwave; no wave; shoegaze; dream pop; post punk; and so on. It was a similar thing with alternative music in the 90s, although nowhere near as pervasive.

to Avril Lavigne and Good Charlotte. Blink-182, Sum-41, Jimmy Eat World, Fall Out Boy, Paramore. And so many other pop punk bands for that matter. So bad.
