I don't have much to add, really.

Except repeating how Totti is by far the player who is subject to the highest rate of fouls in the serie A. Maybe he should just convert to Buddhism like Baggio did if he wants to better control his reactions.

I really understand Trap's (painful) decison not to take Roby to Portugal. Yes he COULD take us to the final yet again, but at what price? I would expect Totti, DP and co to suffer from chronic depression if the Divine Ponytail was included in the squad, and all our hopes would therefore rest on a 37 year old injury-prone class player : that's too risky a bet for me.

I, for one, wouldn't be able to bear seeing Roby be a scapegoat, at this point in his career, if he were to go to the NT and the squad not succeed. He doesn't deserve to have that for a final mark on his legacy.

The problem is though, who else is really playing on his level right now??


DP- umm, no.
Cassano- Has become awfully erratic lately
Vieri- Inconsistent, and injury prone recently.
Inzaghi- See Vieri.
DiVaio- He's in one of "Those streaks" again.
Miccoli- against the Hungary's and Azerbaijan's of the world, certainly. But against Holland, England or France? No Way. Not yet.

If Euro 2004 were to start today, would it be a great stretch of the imagination to assume that Bazzani would indeed be part of the starting 11?? As well as he's playing, I wouldn't want to put all of our eggs in one basket.

You would have him and Corradi right now, and I'm not too comfortable with that.

So we can see why Roby being called up would make perfect sense, although it would divide the team.

Thats funny Kaiser. I guess we agree to disagree. Btw, how are juve fans feeling about Del Piero these days. Do they still support him like they used to or do u get the feeling that De Vaio is pushing him out?

PS - Brescia is slowly moving up the table. They lost some point due to some stupid mistakes. Imagine if they beat Modena, Reggina, and Sampdoria. They could be contenders right now.

That's true...
In 2002 it was a scandal, cause Roby was the most "on fire" player, the one who could do the difference, right now unfortunately he is struggling physically. He is not in good healt at all :down: so it's not wort it to piss off all the players, the big clubs, ecc... calling him.

A lot of ouers fowards are struggling 4 one reason or the other... right now I will call up Totti, Cassano, Bazzani and Vieri. All the others are not doing good, Roby included... Belive me is better also 4 him not to be call up. In 2002 was an unbelivable scandal but right now is ok.

If you look around the forum you will see that excluding the DP die-hard fans, Juve fans say he is sucking and Miccoli and Di Vaio will deserve to play instead of him. BTW yesterday he was even booed by his own fans in Delle Alpi.

Compleately agree! I too have mentioned it before, that I don't want him to go as I'm 99,9% sure that he would be blamed for everything that would go wrong no matter if he would actually step on the pitch or not. Someone like him doesn't need and doesn't deserve this!

And yet we go and offer the guy the fat new contract Simbol or not one has to perform on the field, especially for that money. I was never his fan, how could I be, he is kind of "guilty" that Roby had to leave Juve!

I'm glad they are doing great. It might change Roby's mind about retiring, although (even if it hurts like hell) it would be better to stop as he's leaving the pitch with too much pain lately.

I don't want to sound arrogant or anything, so please forgive me if it comes across that way, but has Roby ever tried having his medical procedures done in the US??

We have athletes who tear the cruciate ligaments all the time, and they come back as good as new, if not better than before.

We have some amazing techniques and procedures here that would fix Roby, and possibly alleviate all the pain he's going through.

Baggio have been operated always in Italy or France. 4 the first surgeis in Italy than 4 his biggest injury he went to San't Etienne. He never recovered 100% and it took him 2 years to go back to the field, he needed an other surgery right after and the right knee gave him problems all his carear, and infact nedeed to be operated others times.. But we cannot say that there was something wrong with the operation cause it was many years ago and the medical procedures weare not the same as now. And btw the kind of injury he had is very rare 4 soccerplayers, he broke togeder both cruciate and lateral ligament + meniscous and "capsula" (don't know in english, the name of this), nothing was left in his knee, doctors had to rebuild it from 0; at that times peaple thought that he wuould never be able to play again. So I guess, that also if he didn't recover perfectly, doctors did what they could.
4 his last 2 surgeries he went to Bologna. The one in 2002 (left knee cruciate ligament reconstruction) it was a big succes, 77 days and he was back in the field, a world record. The one of last July (again the right knee) I don't know... officially everything went ok, but seeing how many problems is Roby having this season who knows...

The injury who ruined his knee anycase was the one in 1985, I don't know if maybe in some other part of the world surgeons and tecnique are better but I don't think that nobody could do anything cause it was 20 years ago and that was a kind of injury that is suppose to mean the end of a player carear.

I know that there are many sportmen who breake ligaments and than come back like before but bear that usually they breake one or maximum 2 of tham, Roby broke all of tham at the same time. It is a totaly different thing.
His left knee, 4 example, wheare he had just "ordinary" meniscus and ligament surgery recovered perfectly. 4 the right one I think there was nothing to do, unfortunately... with that kind of injury it was a miracole 4 him even to play again.

Right now the place in which Roby take care of all his physical problems is Bologna's Isokinetic rehabilitation center but anycase he goes every year somewear in Colorado to do some tests to his knees so I imagine he has some points of reference also there.

Anycase I am curios to know your opinion... do you actually know about somebody who had exately the same injury Roby had in 1985 and than recovered perfectly?

Ligaments not tendon. Cruciate, collateral, meniscuos and capsula (don't know the translation of this). No original ligaments are left in his right knee.
When I will have time I will manage to translate a report of the injury also if is very difficolt cause on-line-translator do not have medical words...

I have this issue of Calcio Italia, and according to the article, ALL ligaments, tendons, etc. in his right knee were torn !!!!

He's lucky to have ever played after that !!!!

The only injury I can think of like that is Robert Edwards, who played for the New England Patriots, when he ruptured all of his tendons, broke his kneecap, tore 3 ligaments, and nearly severed a nerve.

It took 2 years, but he was able to play again. He even scored his first touchdown against the Patriots when he played for the Miami Dolphins.

Yes... nothing was left in his knee... and as Robert Edwards it took him 2 years to play again, and when he looked set, his new knee didn't make it even to support his first match and he had to affort a second surgery, so 4 the complete recover it took 3 years. That's why Roby, the most natural talented guy ever born in Italy, also if he was already famos and a record-transfer at 17, never played for the under 21 NT. He spended from 18 to 21 years injured. :down:
Anycase considering that it was 1985 I also think that he was very lucky to play again and that it was impossible 4 Prof Bosquet (the french surgeon who took care of him) to do a better job.

All the others injuries to the right knee weare conseguence of this and to the left he had just "normal" injury like a meniscous when in Vicenza and the cruciate ligament 2 years ago. Also all the problems that he has with his back depend on the knee who do not allow him to walk and run in a good way.

The sad thing about Robert Edwards was, he was a 1st round draft pick of New England in 1997, rushed for 1100 yards as a rookie, and back then, the NFL would have a special football game for the rookies, and it would be flag football played on the beaches of Hawaii, and that is how he got injured.

Needless to say, the NFL doesn't have that game anymore.

Yee, I knew it, and also he is allergic to the strongest medicines so all he could do was just stand the pain. If you read some interview to the trainers and phisiotheraphyst who took care of him is impressing what they say... 4 all his carear long Baggio had to do specifics things to take his knee togeder, he can't train how all the others player does, it won't be enught 4 him.
It was such a nature joke that a player gifted with this infinite talent had to be born with those fragile knee :groan:

Yes the reason why Roby is so loved it's cause he achived his success not "just" thanks his natural-talent but also soffering a lot.
The support Roby has is different to others grate sportmen... he is truly the example that young Italian kids take whatever they are doing.
He is so important 4 Italy, we are so proud of him but also abroad he is so loved, in many countrys he still the most loved soccer player even if are 4 years that he do not play any international games.
I think that Roby deserve at 100% all the success he had and all the love that surround him, cause he is not just the gratest Italian player ever but also a grate person who went trought so mutch "bad luck" but always made it to win over it.

According to media Roby isn't recovered at 100% cause his knee still hurting, but he trained all week long so it may be that he will play on sunday. The decision will be taken tomorrow morning.

There's a very Romantic quality about the guy, that we can relate to. It's not just Italians either. All my portugese friends,(about a dozen of them) that follow football think that Baggio is a god.

Mostly I think that is because you didn't follow him that mutch.
I guess everybody who like soccer like Roby elegance and skill, but just who followed him can really keep the emotions he gives. He is truly different from others players and sportmen in general.
In Italy nobody in sport was never loved so mutch, and it goes also outside of sport... a statistic made beetin >18 school boys discovered that thay consider Baggio one of their life examples, just the Pope and Nelson Mandela weare mentioned more than him
