If that was the case, its not meant to be derogatorry towards you in any way.

There's a very Romantic quality about the guy, that we can relate to. It's not just Italians either. All my portugese friends,(about a dozen of them) that follow football think that Baggio is a god.
Yes and Roby is not just the most popolar italian player abroad but he is the most famose person in general.
Abacus has accurate statistics about it, in many countrys peaple do not have a clue about who is Berlusconi, Ciampi, Prodi, ecc... but everybody knows who Baggio is :D
He is Italy flag

A buddhist as the ambassador of the country that is the home of the Catholic Church...unheard of

Are you sure that Benigni or unfortunate exports such as Eros Ramazzotti and Laura Pausini are not even more popular than the Divine Ponytail, though?

In the States, Benigni is known as taht loveable one-hit wonder who won an Oscar for Life is Beautiful, Ramazzotti and Pausini don't even register on the Radar Screen.

Besides Roby, who is a big hit amongst US soccer fans(contrary to popular belief, they do exist), Italy's largest export so far is Andrea Bocelli.

Cost me 250.00 a ticket to see him perform, but he was worth it.

It's too bad really that the only movie Benigni is famous for abroad is "La vita è bella", when "Johnny Stecchino" or "Non ci resta che piangere" are arguably the best films of his répertoire. But their typically italian cultural references may be harder to comprehend for a non-italian audience.

Still, I would expect Roby to be famous only among US football fans, whereas a larger proportion of the public might be more acquainted with, say, the big names of the fashion industry and Pavarotti.

yes, you're right, he's only popular among the US football fans, but EVERYONE loves him, regardless of club or country. You can walk into a Portugese social club, or an Irish bar, or a meetimg place on the weekends for fans of the EPL, and if you mention Roby, a great amount of respectr and admiration is what you'll come across.

Of course in Europe and US there are many famous Italian peaple in many "cathegories" like singers, actors, fashion designers, ecc... but in many countries in Africa, Asia and also South America they are not so known, cause very few from us arrive. I think that is especially in poor countries that Roby made the difference and became overall the most popolar, cause soccer, especially WC's, arrive everyweare.

I agree with Kaiser Franco about Benigni mouvies, it's a pity that other films, like the one mentioned didn't became so famous abroad but I guess that it will be impossible to make tham so nice if translated.
Did you know that Benigni is crazy about Roby and Roby always say that Benigni mouvies are his favorites and they are also very good friends :)

Anycase according that abacus reserch the most famous Italian abroad after Roby is Luciano Pavarotti, an other Roby and Juve fan ;)

Good draw 4 Brescia yesterday. Considering that they weare playing in 10 almost the whole time, isn't bad in Granillo. Grate performance 4 Roby who was still feeiling pain to his knee and infact he had to play with an infiltration but schowed a lot of good things, playing as MF. :thumb:

Here is a pic of the match: Roby (who weared a new pair of blue schoes) with ouers "old friend" Baiocco, Roby really made him going crazy yesterdy :D

@Sergio: on "Football Italia" there is an interview to Roby in which he explane about his injury in 1985: He snapped all the ligaments of the right knee just 2 days after he signed his contract with Fiorentina. During the surgery (very riscky at the time) they had to drill trought his kneecap and reattch all the ligaments with 220 internal stitches.

Here is the link to the articole:

And here to the other pages of that magazine:

In Roby book and also in others books about him it is explaned in a better and more detailed way but 4 me that's too difficolt to translate

Baggio to delay retirement?

Roberto Baggio has admitted that his passion for the game may see him postpone his retirement.

The 36-year-old revealed at Christmas that he would be hanging up his boots at the end of term but that may no longer be the case.

"I’m happy with the recognition that I’m still receiving," he told a local Brescia TV station today.

"On the one hand I’m thinking that I will retire as I had already announced, but I still have a great deal of passion for the game which is making things difficult."

Baggio argued that his battles with injury was a major factor in his decision. And he admits he’s finding it tough this term.

"Unfortunately I’m having to still battle against the pain," he added. "I picked up a knock in the game against Milan and I’ve been struggling ever since."

The news that the former Juventus ace is once more considering his future will be welcomed by Brescia and football fans in general.

‘Il Codino’ has played 14 times for the Lombard side this term where he has still been displaying his silky skills.

He may have only netted five times but he has created numerous goals and scoring chances for his teammates.

I'm going to try to find a Baggio jersey when I go out to Las Vegas next month.

There is no way I'm paying 65 euros just to have one shipped from Italy.

Either one Nina. I prefer the white one though as well

There's also the Gold jersey from the 90th anniversary as well, but I don't want to look like Liberace:D

I bought the brescia jersey from calcio brescia back in november. it only arrived yesterday but it is a beautiful jersey. not sure if its worth $145CAN to wear. Maybe i would get it framed if it was autographed or something. Anybody have an address for Roby or his manager in hopes of sending something to get signed? Maybe through brescia calcio but they never respond to their e-mails.

Mark, a member from this forum once sent a Davids jersey to the headquaters in Turin and said that the jersey will be used for humanitarian (a lie of course) reasons and if Davids could sign it. He did and they sent back the jersey (she was from London). You could try the same, but then again, Brescia's officials might not be as nice as ours or you don't really want to lie :) Don't know what esle to say :undecide: How about phoning them?

Well aren't you Italian? That usually means a bit darker skin, so gold would look ravishing on you :flirt: :p :D

thanks nina, i've tried calling but no one ever picks up. i think i'll just send in the jersey and be honest about it - we'll see if i get it back. i wonder if sending it to caldongia at baggio's parents house would be better?

Actually, what would u guys suggest, sending it to the their address at Via Luigi Bazoli, 10 or to the Stadio Rigamonte? I'm going to send it priority so they have to sign for it - this way i know who gets it and how to get it back.

Well Via Luigi Bazoli sounds better to me, but you should wait and see what Mate has to say as he probably knows more :) Do you know italian btw? Because ... well ... Italians and english are really not best friends  , besides, you would make a bigger impact. And you will be the one who will take the shipment costs, right, might want to emphasize this :)
