Meanwhile, Portugal beat Liechtenstein 2-1 at Aveiro in a come-from-behind victory, putting Portugal through to WC2006. The last round between these teams resulted in a shocking come-from-behind draw, and Liechtenstein arguably could have won if not tied this match. They seem to have something over Portugal.

Portugal fielded a pretty strong side with notable absences of only Deco and perhaps Costinha and Miguel. Most of the match was pretty much a shooting gallery for Portugal (probably 35-5 in terms of offensive attacks), except that Portugal's finishing was horrendous and Liechtenstein capitalized on their few chances in return. Imagine a shooting gallery where a tin duck ricochets to hit you in the eye. Portugal looks like a solid squad for WC 2006, but they glaringly showed their weaknesses tonight: finishing and defending the counterattack.

Figo actually had a decent game creating chances, but was wretched at his own scoring chances -- including a Beckham-like PK lift. I have no idea why Paolo Ferriera starts at RB for this team -- once again he blew coverage that resulted in a goal, which included miscommunication with Ricardo at GK. But his offensive crosses and passes were good -- that guy should be a winger and not a defender. Where's Miguel?!

Big Phil made some substitution failures by waiting too long and making the wrong ones (midfield rather than attack). Nuno Gomes was brought in too late (82') for all their finishing woes, and he gave them the winner within a couple of minutes of being on the pitch. But this took place not long after Liechtenstein should have gone up 2-1 on a free kick that Ricardo punched out; the only thing saving a goal on the rebound kick was that another Liechtenstein teammate was perfectly positioned in front of goal to block it from going in.

Oh, and perhaps the worst blown ref call I've witnessed this year: a bouncing shot from Figo was deflected just over the net in front of goal by the fully outstretched arms of a Liechtenstein defender. Scandalous. But with Portugal's finishing, a PK probably wouldn't have made the difference. The win was more relief than jubilation for the squad.

Beg to differ young man. It shows a certain carelessness on the part of the "big three". We should have had the series wrapped up by game 7. Same as the other two.
But when was the last time you saw teams like Angola and Ivory Coast do so well and qualify so convincingly? No matter what the giants did there can be no doubt that the smaller teams really brought their A game and stepped up a gear this year.

The Ivory Coast failed to beat Cameroon home and away. So on the strenght of that who is better? Had the Cameroonians not been silly enough to drop some points along the way against worthless Sudan, Benin and Libya, then yesterday's final straw, they'd have been there!

If memory serves me correct, FIFA has always stated that they want football to be a game that is all about goals right? Take a look at Nigeria's final table:
    ..........P W D L GF GA Pts
    Angola 10 6 3 1 12 6 21
    Nigeria 10 6 3 1 21 7 21
Which of the two will light up the WC with goals? Why bring in the head to head rule (which IMO has made it easier for smaller teams to do well in tourneys such as the Champions Laegue) if you want to see more goals? But not to shift blame away from us, we lost this group in Kano as you will see from my posts on page 10 of this thread. Nigeria were too careless when it came to finishing off the small fry (Rwanda 1-1; Angola 1-1) and by the time the idiots at NFA realised the implication of the head to head rule, it was too late. Angola didn't drop points therafter. It was a falacy on our part to hope that Rwanda would hold a team that was sniffing at their first WC appearance...

You might want to call me that Dominic, and maybe I am.

But I have said the truth, and the fact that Nigeria lost out doesn't change, neither does the truth of what I have stated.

Trust me on this: watch all five African teams go to the World Cup and fuck up big time!

Some people can only think short term and that is why we need inteligent, football minded folk to reorganize our football. We need discipline, commitment and dedication from the players. If they are not willing to be positive pieces to the puzzle then they should be discarded regardless of talent. If only CCC had the balls to axe Okocha sooner maybe he would have been able to reign in some of the players that defied all rules.

Today, I think it is obvious that Okocha's indiscipline hurt us more than his talent helped us during this campaign. For those who are willing to give Mikel Obi every latitude as he continues down his current chosen path- beware. A dedicated, disciplined and average footballer is always better for team play than a primadona. Lawal has proven this for over a decade now.

If Mikel does not get his act together then he should be axed from the National team until he is ready to conform and earn his place. This is why Cameroon have been able to achieve what they have and we continue to meander. We have not had the organization and coach that puts the team ahead of any player regardless of status and until we do that, we will continue to suffer.

In the mean time, I understand the need to find a scape goat on which all our problems can be heaped on. Kill Christian Chukwu!

My main man in Mexico did some major damage tonight as well. After coming up lame against the last U.S. match where he fully played out of position, Francisco Fonseca scored 4 goals against Guatemala.

BTW, we could be going to our first WC ever. I read that Stanković is injured, which is good news for us.

Spain's going through, there's nothing we can do about it, all they have to do is beat San Marino.

If we go through it would be Serbia we'd kick out. Oh how sweet that would be

Damn, I don't like Spain. But hey, I wish you best of luck. I have many Bosnian friends, and you as well, I would like you to qualify.
