Post the story of your country's World Cup qualification here...

26/3/05
The Super Eagles left it late with two goals in the last six minutes.

The Nigerians dominated much of the game and only several fine saves from Didier Ovono Ebang in the Gabon goal prevented the Super Eagles from taking the lead earlier.

However, Nkwankwo Kanu came on as a substitute with ten minutes remaining to inspire his side to victory.

The West Bromwich Albion striker first set up the Ukraine-based Julius Aghahowa for the first goal after 84 minutes.

Kanu then completed a dream appearance by scoring a tap-in thanks to a cross from Yakubu Ayegbeni.

The win sees Nigeria go top of Group Four with 13 points from six matches.

Undermanned Bahrain upset North Korea 2-1 in Pyongyang
25 March 2005
by AFP

Bahrain's bid to make the FIFA World Cup finals for the first time received an unexpected boost on Friday when they upset North Korea 2-1 in their Asian qualifying match in Pyongyang.

Husain Ali was one of the stars for Bahrain, scoring both goals in the absence of injured star strikers Ala'a Hobeil and Rashid Jamal, while goalkeeper Mohammed Jaffar was equally impressive at the other end of the ground.

For North Korea, it was a case of wasted opportunities in front of a noisy capacity crowd of 70,000 at Kim Il-Sung stadium as they attacked relentlessly all game, only to be denied on more than a dozen occasions by Jaffar.

Bahrain came into the match in disarray after their Croatian coach, Srecko Juricic, abandoned them last month in favour of Oman.

With the injuries to Hobeil and Jamal, and playing in North Korea for the first time, even team officials were saying in the lead up to the match they would be content to escape with a draw.

But, under former coach Wolfgang Sidka who returned to the team for just 10 days to help Bahrain in their matches against North Korea and Japan, they showed a fierce determination all game to fend off their attacking opponents.

North Korea made a furious start to the match, with Kim Yong-Jun's right foot attempt in the third minute going just wide and Jaffar having to fend off a close-range strike from Han Song-Chol a minute later.

North Korea were threatening again in the sixth minute when Bahrain struck on the counterattack, thanks largely to star midfielder Mohammed Salmeen, who came into the match under an injury cloud.

Salmeen made a driving run from halfway down the right side and crossed to a diving Ali, who headed past young North Korean goalkeeper Kim Myong-Gil.

Jaffar put on a stunning display in the first half, making six pressure saves, including a spectacular dive to the right in the ninth minute to fend off a strike from Mun In-Guk.

Bahrain took a 2-0 lead early in the second half when Ahmed Hubail took advantage of loose North Korean defence to run down the right flank and drill a cross to Ali, who had been left unattended in the penalty box and scored easily with a right-foot strike.

North Korea were finally rewarded for their relentless attacking in the 62nd minute, when Pak Song-Gwan's header off a long cross found the net.

    SWEDEN

Just won against Bulgaria and is first in our group. 2 points ahead of Croatia but got one match more played. We have a semi impressive gd 17-2 and we haven't lost an away game in 16 matches, we won the last 6 away games (whatever that counts for). When we went to Bulgaria we stood up to hatred and dispite. The atmosphere was as high as it can possibly be and still we managed to get away with three goals and three points against zero. A good experience for the upcomming matches!

Larsson will be back in may and Sweden is expected to have a rich summer on the transfer market so the future is bound to get inrteresting!

Mali's World Cup qualifier at home to Togo was abandoned tonight after serious crowd trouble erupted in the closing stages of the contest.

In chaotic scenes, gunshots were fired as thousands tried to flee the stadium in Bamako.

The trouble flared when Togo scored in the 90th minute to take a 2-1 lead. Mali had been 1-0 up in the contest before conceding an 83rd-minute equaliser.

Togo's coached by former Nigerian NT captain Stephen Keshi.
