Yeah, you've got to be happy with that draw really - couldn't have gone much better. They're still going to take a lot of effort to beat but lets not kid ourselves they are one of the weakest 2 teams or so left in the competition, and we shouldn't be fearing them.

Werder Bremen Reactions

General manager, Klaus Allofs:

That wasn't exactly our dream draw. We'd hoped for Arsenal or Liverpool. There were surely also a few easier draws in the pot. Juve are the dominant team in Italy, they have a ten point jump on the second placed side in Italy and that having conceeded very few goals, they are also blushing with big names. A club like Juve are very confident and will consider Werder beatable. We are the clear underdogs but you can reach the next round from such a position. We are satisfied, they will surely be two interesting matches.

Jürgen L. Born, chairman of the board:

Werder are in good form this season so a cracker like this has come at the right time. Juventus are a world class team and an attractive opponent for us.

Head coach, Thomas Schaaf:
We are very satisfied. They are a cracking side who will come to Bremen with a long list of top players. It's an interesting draw for us as we've never played Juventus. It will be a real challenge to prove ourselves in this tie.

Every team in the pot was strong but Juve is one of the most noticeable. They are more present than other teams thanks to their success.

Greetings from Germany. ;)

I'd like to provide you with some information about our team. Most of us think, of course, that we'll have very few chances to advance, but, still, there's some hope. ;)

Werder is placed third in the Bundesliga at the moment. They're 2 points behind Hamburg (who they will face on sunday in the Weserstadium for the showdown of the first half of the season) and 6 points behind Bayern. In 16 matches there were 11 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses (at Munich (1-3), Schalke (1-2) and Gladbach (1-2)). Werder scored by far the most goals in the league, 45 in 16 matches. Twelve goals more than the second best team (Bayern).

On the other side, they conceeded 20 goals, because of the inexperienced a pretty new defense. As Valerien Ismael went to Bayern for 8 million € when the season started and as the second best defender, Petri Pasanen, was injured for about 3 months, the new signings Naldo and Leon Andreasen had to do their best to prevents the opponents from scoring.

In general, the defense is our weak spot, whilst our attackers Klose, Klasnic and Valdez are our most dangerous "weapons". Klose for example scored 16 goals in the 13 matches he attended and Klasnic 8 goals in 12 matches. They're of course the Bundesliga's best attacking duo. The list of the Bundesliga's top scorers (goals and assists) shows, that Werder's attack and midfield are by far the most dangerous in the league:

Player - club - points - (goals/assists):

1 Klose Werder Bremen 20 (16/4)
2 Borowski Werder Bremen 14 (7/7)
2 Barbarez Hamburger SV 14 (6/8)
4 Klasnic Werder Bremen 13 (8/5)
5 Micoud Werder Bremen 12 (3/9)

Miroslav Klose was voted "Player of the Month" in october, Tim Borowski "Player of the Month" in november. Other key players are Croatian international Ivan Klasnic and former French international Johan Micoud. Our starting 11 should like this, when we will face you (German internationals marked):

-----------------Wiese------------------
--Owomoyela---Naldo---Pasanen---Schulz--
----------------Baumann-----------------
-----------Frings-----Borowski----------
----------------Micoud------------------
------------Klose-----Klasnic-----------

The complete squad:

Number - name - nationality - (national team appearences)

goalkeepers:
#1 Andreas Reinke GER
#18 Tim Wiese GER (12/U21)
#30 Kasper Jensen DEN
#33 Christian Vander GER

defenders:
#2 Frank Fahrenhorst GER (2)
#3 Petri Pasanen FIN (27)
#4 Naldo BRA
#5 Ümit Davala TUR (52)
#15 Patrick Owomoyela GER (10)
#16 Leon Andreasen DEN (15/U21)
#23 Jelle van Damme BEL (9)
#27 Christian Schulz GER (3)

midfielders:
#6 Frank Baumann GER (28)
#7 Jurica Vranjes CRO (20)
#10 Johan Micoud FRA (17)
#19 Pekka Lagerblom FIN (5)
#20 Daniel Jensen DEN (17)
#22 Torsten Frings GER (48)
#24 Tim Borowski GER (15)

attackers:
#9 Nelson Haedo Valdez PAR (7)
#11 Miroslav Klose GER (50)
#14 Aaron Hunt GER (2/U21)
#17 Ivan Klasnic CRO (15)

As you can see, almost only players, who play for their countries.

Coach: Thomas Schaaf, since 1999. He played for Werder himself for 16 years. With him being headchoach, Werder won the Cup 1999 and the League/Cup Double 2004 (when we thrashed Bayern 3-1 in their own stadium and celebrated the title in Munich :D).

So, hopefully, we'll see two nice matches.
Fantastic stuff man.Thanx for the informations.;)

I think Milan is going to have their hands full with Bayern. Since this is off a couple months, Milan will have plenty of time to shake off their recent losses. But a Bayern side is just the kind of team that can exploit an overconfident Milan.

If we're lucky in the States, they may show match 1 of these two teams on ESPN, which would be great. That is, presuming they don't go apeshit over the EPL teams by covering both legs of theirs (I'm presuming Liverpool and Chelsea will play on opposite days of the week) -- which is entirely possible, given their track record.

It's a quotation from Bayern's general manager, Uli Hoeness, he made one week before the match between Bayern and Werder. It said: "With our success in Cologne, we kept our chances in the Championship and made an important step in the race for the second place. Now I'm looking forward to a hot match against Bremen. Then we will see, which is the best team in Germany. We have to sweep them away with a difference of three or four goals and have to annihilate them. Then it's gonna be very exciting again."

The pic shows his face, when Werder was leading 3-1 10 minutes from time. It was so fuckin' hilarious, I laughed my ass off. It was already 3-0 after 35 minutes in the first place. And each goal was more beautiful than the one before. First one after a big mistake by Kahn (see pics), second one a perfect lob, third one a shot with a lot effet from 25 metres. Well, but Hoeness didn't learn from that one. He's still not able to keep his mouth shut.

    perfect draw for juve.
Chelsea vs Barca, Bayern vs Milan,. Two less for the competition.

the rival is easy, but we have to have caution. I belive that the next round is vs Villareal.

Bremen are an explosive side on their day, they are all over the place from the get-go and make alot of runs, at least AFAIK.

Their defence is a liability though, as is their inability to perform consistently both match to match and over a course of 90 minutes. Nonetheless they are a team to be feared as are most teams in the CL, we'll get through this one without trouble if we keep our heads down, our feet on the floor and our eyes on the ball.
