Greetings from Germany. ;)

I'd like to provide you with some information about our team. Most of us think, of course, that we'll have very few chances to advance, but, still, there's some hope. ;)

Werder is placed third in the Bundesliga at the moment. They're 2 points behind Hamburg (who they will face on sunday in the Weserstadium for the showdown of the first half of the season) and 6 points behind Bayern. In 16 matches there were 11 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses (at Munich (1-3), Schalke (1-2) and Gladbach (1-2)). Werder scored by far the most goals in the league, 45 in 16 matches. Twelve goals more than the second best team (Bayern).

On the other side, they conceeded 20 goals, because of the inexperienced a pretty new defense. As Valerien Ismael went to Bayern for 8 million € when the season started and as the second best defender, Petri Pasanen, was injured for about 3 months, the new signings Naldo and Leon Andreasen had to do their best to prevents the opponents from scoring.

In general, the defense is our weak spot, whilst our attackers Klose, Klasnic and Valdez are our most dangerous "weapons". Klose for example scored 16 goals in the 13 matches he attended and Klasnic 8 goals in 12 matches. They're of course the Bundesliga's best attacking duo. The list of the Bundesliga's top scorers (goals and assists) shows, that Werder's attack and midfield are by far the most dangerous in the league:

Player - club - points - (goals/assists):

1 Klose Werder Bremen 20 (16/4)
2 Borowski Werder Bremen 14 (7/7)
2 Barbarez Hamburger SV 14 (6/8)
4 Klasnic Werder Bremen 13 (8/5)
5 Micoud Werder Bremen 12 (3/9)

Miroslav Klose was voted "Player of the Month" in october, Tim Borowski "Player of the Month" in november. Other key players are Croatian international Ivan Klasnic and former French international Johan Micoud. Our starting 11 should like this, when we will face you (German internationals marked):

-----------------Wiese------------------
--Owomoyela---Naldo---Pasanen---Schulz--
----------------Baumann-----------------
-----------Frings-----Borowski----------
----------------Micoud------------------
------------Klose-----Klasnic-----------

The complete squad:

Number - name - nationality - (national team appearences)

goalkeepers:
#1 Andreas Reinke GER
#18 Tim Wiese GER (12/U21)
#30 Kasper Jensen DEN
#33 Christian Vander GER

defenders:
#2 Frank Fahrenhorst GER (2)
#3 Petri Pasanen FIN (27)
#4 Naldo BRA
#5 Ümit Davala TUR (52)
#15 Patrick Owomoyela GER (10)
#16 Leon Andreasen DEN (15/U21)
#23 Jelle van Damme BEL (9)
#27 Christian Schulz GER (3)

midfielders:
#6 Frank Baumann GER (28)
#7 Jurica Vranjes CRO (20)
#10 Johan Micoud FRA (17)
#19 Pekka Lagerblom FIN (5)
#20 Daniel Jensen DEN (17)
#22 Torsten Frings GER (48)
#24 Tim Borowski GER (15)

attackers:
#9 Nelson Haedo Valdez PAR (7)
#11 Miroslav Klose GER (50)
#14 Aaron Hunt GER (2/U21)
#17 Ivan Klasnic CRO (15)

As you can see, almost only players, who play for their countries.

Coach: Thomas Schaaf, since 1999. He played for Werder himself for 16 years. With him being headchoach, Werder won the Cup 1999 and the League/Cup Double 2004 (when we thrashed Bayern 3-1 in their own stadium and celebrated the title in Munich :D).

So, hopefully, we'll see two nice matches.

They definitely go for the attack. And as The0d0rE mentions, they're good in the air. Klose nets a lot of his goals off his head, from what I recall. But I think our defense can handle it. But the "in the air" stuff can worry me with our defense at times.

Well, looks like I won't be seeing any Juve CL matches this CL round either (thank you ESPN-U.S.), so they had better advance. :ferocious

Actually, only 3 of Klose's 16 goals came through headers. But, anyway, I think it's not necessary to mention, that he might be one of the best aerial players in the world nevertheless.

Welcome werder:)....

Indeed Kolse is one of the best aerial players in the world, no-body can deny that, and he'll actually have a good test to see how good against the likes of Canna and Thuram.

btw, why frings came back here again?
he was good player, bayern not need him ?
Frings was not satisfied with Bayern anymore, although he got enough playing time. He couldn't really take the pressure and all the media presence. And Bayern had a lot of other good midfielders, so they did not really need him anymore.

Anyway, Werder was searching for a replacement for Fabian Ernst (who replaced Frings once, when he was transferred to Dortmund - funny story), who went to Schalke on a Bosman free transfer, so Frings came back to Bremen in some kind of exchange with Ismael. Frings cost about 5 million, Ismael 8 million. So Werder made 3 million in the end.

His transfer history:

05 / 06 FC Bayern München Werder Bremen 5.000.000
04 / 05 Borussia Dortmund FC Bayern München 9.250.000
02 / 03 Werder Bremen Borussia Dortmund 8.500.000
96 / 97* Alemannia Aachen Werder Bremen 100.000

So, he's something like a "lost son", who came back. Pizarro was at Werder, too, before he joined Bayern, by the way.

Looking at this draw, it could not have set up more nicely for us. With Chelsea and Barcelona facing each other that means one of the top two clubs in the world will be eliminated, and I just have a feeling it will again not be Rijkaard's year. Milan have a tough test against Bayern and if they slip up, which they very well could, our nemesis would be eliminated, as well one of Arsenal and Real Madrid which looks like a couple nice contests.

But as for our draw, Werder Bremen is one of the sides that I was hoping to face in terms of having an easy first knockout round compared to others. The Northern German side is very unpredictable at times and they were even lucky to escape the group stage with a helping hand from Barcelona. Out of most of the other clubs we could have drawn...specificly Chelsea and Madrid...we have one of the kindest draws in the tournment, however Bremen is a good side in their own right and could trouble us with their powerful attack.

But all in all, with the squad we posess, this really is our Cup for us to win or lose. Depending on the draw we have a very good chance of making the Final if we just get our act together, and I will hold Capello to that task because with the squad we have we should win over Europe sooner or later.

we have to dominate the midfield so that klose/klasnic dont get many chances and if trezeguet is not injured he will bag a couple of goals.
hope we will play with the same determination that we showed in matchday 1 at brugge.

Thats right Greg. We will only be able to see Chelsea-Barcelona and Real Madrid-Arsenal this time around, which are certainly good matches, however ESPN will never show a boring tie between a German and a Italian side. I guess that means waiting until 9pm to see the match from uefa.com.

Fvck ESPN.

The only thing about Werder Bremen I am worried about is their dominance in the air...specificly Klose and Klasnic, along with their tall back four. From what I have seen Bremen scores a lot of goals from headers after crosses or freekicks from the wing, and with Klose up top that is where they could trouble Thuram and Cannavaro...in the air. But apart from that Bremen do not have much going for them, except for Micoud who we should easily shut down during the matches and progress to the next round.
