Theres going to be loads of "I want to stay" sort of stuff from Benitez this week, he plays the press very well, he'll make it look like he's been forced out.

this is all a pr-game, he doesn't want to blow up any bridges
if he leaves he can say ' but I wanted to stay'
and if he stays he can say ' I never wanted to leave'
this will go on for a while I guess
it's the same with Buffon, he clearly is putting the responsibility to our board
if he stays, he would be our hero and if he leaves it's because our board wanted him out
always a winning situation for Rafa and for Gigi

He can but then Liverpool is not obligated to pay out the remainder of his contract, so naturally he isn't eager to resign as he's got quite a hefty contract there.
Are you sure he can resign just like that?
I don't have the details of his contract, but I assume it's a more or less general football contract he has, which would mean he would have to pay damages to Liverpool (most likely an amount equal to the remaining amount he was to be paid if he continued the job).

That's how it usually goes at least:
- Club fires you, they need to pay out the remainder of the contract (unless both parties agree to a different solution, for instance when the fired one has found a new club)

or

- You resign, you need to pay up because you don't live up to the contract you signed. Usually it's not the manager himself that pays, but rather the new club he's going to. Essentially, if we want Benitez, we need to "buy" his current contract from Liverpool, unless all parties agree to a different solution.

I think....you are absolutely spot-on.

it's like Advocaat did with Belgium, he resigned and now has to pay Belgium compensation
he is going to sign for Russia shortly but they have already declared they won't pay for him breaking his contract
so it's up to him now to pay up
he's already saying he will sue Belgium if they give him a hard time
asshole
