So? I was born in some city I really don't like.

You think the country's shitty, but every four years you're there in your t-shirt holding your flag?

Now THAT's odd.
I'm sure many people dislike their place of birth however when the World Cup comes around you still want the Country of your birthplace to do well therefore you would cheer for it.

Just because you dislike your lifestyle does not mean you should drop your support for your Country.

It's sort of funny how folks like Jasper demonize nationality and patriotism. I guess he just hopes his home fails and becomes worse off than before.

    Talk about sado-masochists.
Nationalism as we know it came to be in the 19th century. It played a very big role in both the 19th and the 20th century.

And well.. I'd say nationalism can have its downsides.

So wanting them to do well is the defining factor?

It certainly does. But in sports, I don't think so.

If I fell for the propaganda by the Bush administration, I'd say killing Iraqis would be a patriotic thing to do. Of course, that's not the case at all.

    Of course.

I find it strange that certain people hope their Country fail in Sporting Events just because they dislike their lifestyles.
What if you want Italy to do well?

If wanting is the defining factor.. you can support everyone you like?

No, but in sports nationalism is part of the game. I support Italy in a game. I support them because once during a game everyone else was supporting them. However, when things would get more serious than sports, I would not always back Italy.

Your a clever guy, too clever for a peasant like me :p

I'd like Italy to do well because of the Juventus relationship. However liking a country and supporting a Country is two different things don't you agree?

I couldn't care less how well england do. As long as no one makes a fuss out of it.
If you think the concept of nationality is primitive, then what are you doing voting for politicians of your own nation? Does that make sense?

Shouldn't you really be an anarchist?

Behh.. for me personally not really.

But I'm not the kind of guy who will go out with a huge Italy flag or shout Forza Azzurri all the time. That specific sort of fan behaviour is something I can only see myself doing with others, which automatically means I could only do it if Belgium played. If this is what Andy and yourself are referring to then no, I would not do that for Italy.

I generally agree with most of what's been said in here but at the same time I kinda understand what Andy says.

A lot of people on these forums support Italy though they have no relation to the country what so ever, which is fine, but it's a very 'convenient' team to choose to support and you all have to agree with that. The whole world loves football and most of them can't even field 11 players so the most popular team to support is Brazil. Again, while there's nothing wrong with that, it is a very 'convenient' team to support.

I always support and will always support Sweden in international competitions because I grew up there but in a World Cup like this I generally don't care about any team. I'm supporting the underdogs, African teams (being born and lived there I feel solidarity with the people), Portugal being the exception and I wouldn't exactly call them a 'convenient' team to support.

I know I'm saying a lot while not saying a whole lot :p but that's because there really isn't a 'rule' to this. Just be ready for people to raise their eyebrows and explain yourself...or just show them the middle finger (which ever you prefer).

    :D

Does this mean I can't be an Italy fanboy anymore?
    Bah,

Watch Italy as you would watch most other teams, just appreciate the standard of football they have played throughout the years as I do myself. Just don't come on here saying 'We played well tonight' 'Forza Azzurri' etc or expect a grilling from certain posters.

I suppose you can handle yourself well in arguments though due to you atleast having a brain.

You say its convenient because of the azzurri winning the world cup and i would be more inclined to agree with you if this were a bayern munich forum or a atletico madrid forum. I think its more to do with it being a juve board than anything else. Go back four years and look at the pre world cup threads and i would guess most people were supporting the azzurri before the tournament kicked off. I've followed the Azzurri as long as iv supported the bianconeri. :flag1:
