So there is no logical point in you supporting the Azzurri. You're not Italian, but the Azzurri is Italy's national team.

Citizenship does matter. I make special exceptions for some folks though who have been tormented by the system. But in the majority of cases, one can easily say you are or you are not. And with respect to sensibility, you have to be a complete idiot to cheer on somebody other than your own.

    Why do you support Italy?
Oh, but this discussion is purely recreational. You see, you said nationality was an easy thing. I'm merely showing you it isn't.

No, my opinion on the requirements is very simple: you have to like the culture. You don't have to be part of it or anything, liking it is enough. It all means squat anyway.

    Ow. I see.

But what about the example of the guy who lived in Italy all his life but wasn't granted citizenship?

    He can't support Italy?

But I thought it was about culture?

What culture does he have? His culture is Ghanaian after all? Despite not knowing a single Ghanaian and living in Italy?
I'd say that's one of the exceptions. But I don't understand why one would want to support a nation that refuses to give him citizenship. Does it make any sense? I don't think so.

I think it comes down to personal belief. Say you were born an American but your family moved to Brazil when you were very young and you've grown up and spent all your life in Brazil. Would it not be natural to support Brazil? for me in that case you would support Brazil over the US. Only because you have lived there all your life.

Your pointing out some extreme cases here Andries. Which not one of them applies to the Azzurri fans on this forum. So in that case then yes people who support Italy on this forum are leeches who suck up the glory Italy has had.
You would think so, but they happen on a daily basis. And if these happen it means nationality is not so easy to define. And if we can't even define loyalty to a nation, how could we ever set requirements for supporting a football team?

It's not the nation that refuses to give him citizenship, it's the state.

Most of the time, it is an easy thing. No doubt about that.

But again, lets be honest here. Most of those folks like yourself who support the Azzurri but are not Italian are not doing it because they "like the culture."

I have a nice beachfront property in Phoenix to sell you, Andries. I also have a nice toilet full of shit if you'd care to purchase it.

Grow up, dude. We know the only reason why you, and others, support the Azzurri is because they're good. If Italy was poor at the game, you'd probably support Germany or Brazil.

    That's a goddamned fact.

    Now here's another question:

you're family is pretty much held hostage by the government. You can't leave the country. Obviously you want to go away. World Cup comes up.

You have to support your country?

You've show certain examples that back up your claims that Nationality is not just black and white.

However how would you prove to be loyal to that Nation though without Citizenship?, thats the bigger question.

No. I support Italy since I was four. I didn't know anything about their history. We were in Italy and with Italian friends and they said I had to support the blue jerseys. I obviously didn't know who they were.

It is. But that's not my problem. That actually helps my argument.

Andries, think about this, seriously. Why on Earth would you want to cheer on something you have no ties to whatsoever, not even a family member, when you yourself would play for your own nation if you could?

Does it really make any sense? Really?

It can't make sense, as if it would, then there would be no point to the international game.

Before calling me an idiot, think about it.

Thats the key in International football and what seperates it from club football. Your ties with that particular country. I cannot understand people who've never lived in Italy have no family member from Italy but yet still supporting Italy. That really is strange and I can never understand.

If Jasp really believed in what he spewed, he'd not even watch the World Cup. He'd outright reject anything when it comes to nationality. Certainly he would not support a nation, would he?

Such hypocrisy. And he says for us to grow up. Give me a BREAK.

i cheered for three other teams today. I watch it because i like watching football. I dont agree with the idea of the Europa league either but i still watched that.
If you really believed in what you said, you wouldn't have watched football today.

You can't get any credibility doing this, Jasp.
