No World Cup final for Pessotto despite improvement

ROME (AFP) - Juventus team manager Gianluca Pessotto's condition has improved slightly 12 days after jumping from his office window in a suicide attempt, said a spokesman at Turin's Le Molinette hospital.

"In these kinds of situations things can change very quickly one way or another but there are still signs of optimism today," said head of intensive care Pier Paolo Donadio on Sunday.

The 35-year-old former Italy utility player, who complained of stress after retiring as a player to take on the manager's role with the Serie A champions in May, was visited during the day by former Juve teammate Nicola Lombardo:touched: and Turin archbishop Cardinal Severino Poletto.

However, doctors retracted earlier suggestions that Pessotto would be allowed to watch television coverage of the World Cup final in Berlin between Italy and France late Sunday.

"We don't want to expose him to more fatigue," Donadio said.

Italy full-back Gianluca Zambrotta has dedicated World Cup victory to Juventus team manager and close friend Gianluca Pessotto.

The latter remains in a serious but stable condition in hospital following an apparent suicide attempt in Turin last month and Zambrotta was keen to make him a part of the celebrations.

“Clearly the victory is dedicated to Pessotto,” said the former Bari man who had played alongside Pessotto at club level since 1999.

“He’s going through a difficult moment of his life and this is more important than a World Cup. He is our friend and we hope to sit at his bedside telling him in person that this was all for him.”

Last night’s Berlin encounter against France was somewhat of a Juventus affair with eight Bianconeri on the pitch in total.

Yet Zambrotta insists that everyone was just focused on country rather than club issues for the evening.

“We just said hello to the other Juventini before kick-off, but club allegiances are put on the shelf for the duration,” he added.

In something of an ironic twist, Italy were handed the trophy when Juve’s David Trezeguet – the man who netted the Golden Goal in the Euro 2000 Final – missed his spot-kick by hitting the bar.

“Trezeguet punished us in 2000 and missed this time,” continued the Como-born player. “But that’s football and life.

“It has been a long hard season, so obviously we were all rather tired after 120 minutes, but we gave what little we had left to take the victory.”

Ferrara makes Pessotto call

Ciro Ferrara has revealed that he wants Gianluca Pessotto to assist him within the Juventus youth sector once he recovers from his serious injuries.

The freshly appointed Juventus team manager is in a serious but stable condition in hospital after a serious fall – suspected to be a suicide attempt – last month.

Pessotto, who retired from the game at the end of last season, has since been inundated with support from his Juventus colleagues.

Ferrara again visited his former teammate today and hopes to see him back to his very best as soon as possible.

I asked him if he wanted to work with me with the youngsters, he gestured yes,” the Neapolitan, part of Italy’s Germany 2006 staff, told reporters.

Pessotto got a little emotional when we brought him the World Cup earlier this week. He can’t talk but we can understand his gestures.

“We are all hopeful that he will recover. I’m optimistic by nature and I’m convinced that he will win this battle.

“We’ll continue to stay close to him and ordered him to get well soon. I’ve told him that I want him working by my side for Juventus
.”

Italy and Juventus goalkeeper Gigi Buffon also spent a few minutes with Pessotto at the Molinette hospital on Thursday.

He seems happy with our World Cup achievement,” noted the ‘keeper who then left for a meeting with his club about his future.
