I do think he did good work at Napoli, even if he utterly failed to be competitive outside Serie A (in coppa or europe). What he did with his team was impressive in the league.

This season he's failed to be competitive in PL, but he's met expectations in Europa League for sure (best team in the competition so getting to the final is probably the expectation).

He's a mixed bag as a coach. Tactically inflexible, without much of a plan B, and an inability to rotate (partly because of that tactical inflexibility).

Honestly though, that has to be one of the dumbest posts I've read on this forum.

From a result point of view, he has done well in Chelsea. 3rd place finish in the league, reached finals in both the Liga cup and EL. On the downside, he has not been able to get Chelsea to play the way he want, and he is still not willing to do the necessary rotation.

Looking at how utterly pathetic and clueless we have been going forward this season, evidently just shouting at your team to go press is not as easy as you’d like to think. Our pressing this season has been so uncoordinated, even technically limited teams can easily play their way out.

To teach your team how to attack like a team and not just a bunch of individuals is the hardest thing to coach in football. There are only a select few managers who know how to do this.

Some of the greatest teams of all time played catenaccio.

Bayern 2013

Please. Real Madrid didn't play gung-ho attacking football under Zidane lol. They were ruthless and clinical in attack because of the GOAT, but built that from being exceptionally well organized and solid in midfield and defence. Doesn't make them a defensive team, but certainly they weren't some gung-ho Pep or Klopp style attacking team.

There are clearly far fewer managers who can pull off winning while playing pragmatic, catenaccio football in this modern era, because rule changes over the last 10-15 years predominately favour attackers. You're such a millennial, that you fail to see anything past 7-8 years ago, and are somehow oblivious to this.

Hardest thing to coach? Bullshit. It's pretty obvious teaching a team to be tactically organized defensively is substantially more difficult and requires more skill. Defending and countering in the modern era, where defenders have so many limits placed upon them is clearly more difficult as it requires ridiculous tactical organization and then reacting and adapting this to the opponent. Both teams with brilliant individual attacks, and teams who have brilliant overall team-play in attack. Which is why it's been so difficult for managers to succeed with it this past decade.

This is why, now that we've moved on from Allegri, I'm perfectly happy for us to go for a coach with a more attack-oriented philosophy, as there are very few left who can master pragmatic, defence first football and win with it.

Bayern 2013 and Real 2017 were both very attacking teams, just because they weren’t obsessed with possession like 2011 Barca does not mean they were defensive.

It's way harder to master attacking football and if you do it correctly it has a higher celling than defensive one ans you will have a team like Liverpool or City that play some great football, scores most goals in the league and concede less than defensive teams.

It's so hard to counter a well crafted dominant team and beat them, that's why coaches like Mou and Simone have a hard time winning something anymore with their defensive minded tactics.

Lots of members on this forum are stuck in the past and think liking attacking football makes you a brainless idiot, there is a reason Max was shown the door and it's because he can't take us forward anymore with his pragmatic approach anymore

The opposition teams are so well drilled and organised in attack they will pin you back for large periods of the game, it's very hard not to concede when this happens so you really just have to go for it now and try to outscore your opponents because it's almost inevitable they will score goals even with a parked bus, the only question is how many will they score?

I remember a parked bus used to be very effective and could shut opponents down entirely, but now the attacking department of football has been revolutionised that it's the most effective way to win games

Catenaccio in my opinion is finished and not the way to win anymore
