Oh I don't think it could be called backtracking for everyone... I mean, I see him as an average to decent striker well-suited for a mid-table club. Another Matri-type. Will probably have a couple good years somewhere in his career, but it's very unlikely he's going to be some consistent 15-20+ goal scorer at a major club.

The backtracking would be more so from the people saying he is complete crap, he's terrible, he's not good enough to even be a 5th choice, etc. There's a difference between that and the recognition that he's currently an average striker, not a top one right now. There are quite a few very insulting opinions towards this guy.
Noone was against him, the real issue was that we paid 18m for our 4th striker when we couldn't afford our main goals. If he turns to be a player at the same level of a 24th age Matri, Great

I'm not worried about this, its the carbon copy of Morata and Llorente. Worked for him, I'm sure it will work for Paulo.
Is it though? Morata was left out in favour of Llorente, but in this situation it seems like Max wants to play 4-3-3 and perhaps Dybala doesn't fit into that formation.

Going to be a bit awkward if our future Tevez replacement star striker gets ostracised from our starting XI because of the formation change.

The only place I see him excelling in a 433 variant is on the right. But Cuadrado is an actual winger and currently has to be the first attacker on the team sheet

How about Central? You know the guy is actual Central forward and that's how he made his career. How is a wing position he rarely played supposed to be only place he can function?

And before someone says he is not big and strong for Central forward, we don't play any crosses whatsoever so it's pointless. There were several instances were Mandzu was too slow and awkward on the ball yesterday that would fit Dybala very well.

Agreed, the idea that a side must have a big and strong centerforward to win games is a myth. Plenty of top sides get away without having much aerial threat. I think using Mandzukic as a supersub would maximize his strengths anyway.
