Platini: 'Pogba not a star'
Football Italia

UEFA President Michel Platini believes that Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba is not a star player on the same level as Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.
The former Juventus great criticised the French international’s low goal tally and expressed his belief that this must improve if he were to be considered a great.
“Pogba isn’t a superstar,” Platini said to RTL.

“A great footballing star is someone who scores a lot of goals.
“I don’t know if Paul Pogba is someone who can be on the same level as Messi or Ronaldo, as they both score 50 goals a season.
“It’s interesting to notice that when he loses the ball and his teammates suffer, they yell at him straight away.”
Pogba has scored 10 goals in 38 appearances for the Old Lady this season, helping them to the Scudetto, Coppa Italia final and Champions League final.

Oh so Cannavaro, Maldini, Buffon, Xavi and the others aren't footballing stars? Great logic there Platini. Football isn't being played only by the forwards you know.

I kinda understand what he meant to say but if we're to set the bar as high as Messi/Ronaldo level then nobody else in Football is a star.

There's much more to Pogba's game than scoring goals. He isn't a 10, he isn't a 9.

He just feels threatened by Pogba. He is afraid that Pogba might surpass him.
Never happening. Not in a million years, sorry.

Pogba is the Ronaldinho of this generation in terms of hype and popularity imo.

There's a striking similarity somehow even though they are different type of players.

It's true that players generally shouldn't be compared with those two, but mentioning Pogba and his role next to those guys makes absolutely zero sense. What he offers to the team is totally different. That's like saying Messi and Ronaldo will never be as good as Pogba cause of his defensive output and tackles.

Yeah, they play in different positions anyway.

Yeah, they play in different positions anyway.
It's not a matter of positions it's who Platini was.

I was too young and didn't care for Football in his early to mid 80's days, so i only remember hearing something about his French team in his later days but everyone single older friend of mine who actually saw him play says he was even better than Zidane.

Pogba is good but to reach those levels is almost impossible. Especially when he's not a forward.

Thing is, he's kinda right, the biggest stars in Football history are forwards. Of course we have greats who played other roles like Beckenbauer, Maldini and so on but most of the attention is aimed at the forwards. That's just the way it is.

A classic quote/article to rile fans up.

Platini is clearly talking in terms of marketability and no-one has the marketability of Messi and Ronaldo just now.

Platini is not passing comment on the ability of the players.

This is what I was talking about. When we ask people about great footballers they will probably say Pele, Maradona, Messi, CR7, R9, Romario, Ronaldinho, Cruyff, Baggio etc. They are all either forwards/AM/Trequartista. I am one of the people who doesn't think it's fair to players in other positions, and this is very noticeable in the Ballon D'Or. Football is a team game, you can't only play football with forwards.

But I understand why people, especially people who doesn't watch much football, choose forwards as their favourite player. They are easily the most noticeable. Hell, my favourite players are Del Piero, Ronaldinho, and Bergkamp.

But I just feel that players playing in other positions needs more credit. Players like Buffon, Pirlo, and Maldini.

Indeed. But like i said it's just the way it is. Goals win you games, winning games grants you titles. Whoever scores them is automatically brought to the spotlight.

Platini sees Pogbas Flaws in not helping tracking back, leaving Evra in the shiiter, where we'll get punished against Bartha. And wants him to make him eat his own words and score so platini can hand over the CL trophy come June 6th.

Firing our Paul up. So simple. Surprised no one thought of it. Mind games.
