I don't see why people hold that Euro performance in such high regard, I thought it was pretty poor aside from the game against Germany.
Lol dude let's not joke, the games against Spain and England were litterally terrific. I didn't see Italy play that well not even at WC 2006, even if that team was really better for the champions and experience it had... But, except the game against Croatia and the final, the whole EURO2012 for Italy was amazing.

Agreed with AFL.That side was really nothing special until one fine day Balo gave a once in a bluemoon performance with Germany choking hard.

The side was pretty much riding on Pirlo's heroics.
Nah.

Nah.
Italy played really well in the 1st half against Croatia imo. They dropped off a lot in the 2nd half though, and Croatia scored the inevitable equaliser, but Italy should have had the game won much earlier. Was a frustrating game to watch.

Agreed... Italy should have put the game to bed in the first half, then in the second they tried to keep the result and got bited in the ass in the end with a shitty goal. It was still an under-par performance compared to the others in the competition... Then Prandelli fucked up the whole thing in the final

I think he'd spend it on 10 stendardo's and a kevin constant
Investing in youngsters when you have the cash for ready made players is a mistake. Normally, we dont have the cash for well established players because these players have already received recognition for their skills by other clubs, the fans and the media and so they cost a lot of money. What we look for is a market inefficiency where you find a skilled player who has not yet been recognized for his talents by the majority of the clubs and so you can get him at a lower price. These players are like the vidal purchase where only a small number of clubs saw his talent while media gave him little attention.

We also invest in youngsters which are cheaper but the odds for finding a player that will be good enough for us is very low. Most of them never become anything special and if you are very lucky you'll find one or two out of the whole pool that are suitable for the first team. Even teams with much better scouting and training centers like Ajax or Barca cant rely on their youngsters and have to make big purchases if they are going to be at the top level (ajax cant do that).

If we do sell Pogba for big money. We need a mix of finished product players at high prices and under-valued players at moderate prices. Our scouting for youngsters is rightfully limited to italy and a couple more countries.

That final was am absolute clusterfuck :D He got so many things wrong with team selection/tactics, but he also wasn't helped by having an extremely tired and unfit team, plus some injuries to subs (Fuck Thiago Motta) basically ending the game as a contest in like the 50th min.

My story:

I saw the England game in Little Italy in Toronto. I was still living in a suburb at the time (now I live in the city so WC 2014 was easier, but much more painful) and took the trek into the city for that game. It was great. I saw Pirlo crush England's soul with that chip, and then we celebrated in the streets. Two of my friends are English and German mixes so that was a good start. Then the Germany game.... I was working, but the financial district didn't care, we all watched the game in our offices. Italy owned Germany, and I was happy. I also had huge bragging rights over those two English/German friends in back to back victories.

Then Spain...

I decided I'd watch in little Italy again. Unfortunately, we got there a bit late, and my friends were cheap, meaning no one wanted to pay the 20 dollar cover (I would have) that the bars were charging. We had to look in the fringes of Little Italy, so we ended up in this Bar, Sneakie Ds that served cheap Mexican food. We figured considering it was on the fringe of Little Italy it would be Italians there. We thought wrong.

When we arrived, people with Spain shirts started pouring in. Within minutes of the game starting, goals started pouring in as well. This was accompanied with an obese Spanish guy who would scream goal, while his voice cracked, every time Spain scored. I wanted to punch him in the throat.

Anyways, at half time we left and watched the rest of that awful game outside a bar in little Italy where we could all be depressed in unity.

And then we walked home while seeing a parade of non-spaniards in Spain jerseys celebrating their fake team. You know they were fake Spanish because they were East Indian or Asian.

IIRC, they played very well in that first game against Spain with a 3-5-2. Wasn't De Rossi played as the 3rd man back?

In the final, didn't they play 4 in the back (maybe a Christmas tree?)

Maybe someone remembers better than me.

Yep you got it right. 3-5-2 with De Rossi as sweeper in the group stage. Italy also used a similar formation a year later at the Confederations Cup and neutralised Spain there as well.

They spent all their time learning how to defend against Spain that they forgot how to score against a 5 man defensive unit playing a high line 2 years later.
