Lyles did well to pull that back as he didn't start well, great time and close race. The Jamaican is a big dude and he wasn't very smooth at the end, he was grimacing and just about got caught.
Huge comeback indeed. Lyles was last at 30 metres. I thought Saville would turn up after easily beating Lyles during the qualifiers.

Apparently fastest ever 100m as the guy in last was 9.91 lol.
Yeah, unbelievable.
0.12 difference between first and last. That was the difference between first and second in 2012 (Bolt was first though) and in 2000. Less than the difference between first and second in 2008 (Bolt again)

Insanely impressive to come back and win that in 9.79 with just how shit that start was. If Lyles could figure out a decent start, Bolt’s world record would be under legitimate threat. He’s such a poor starter in the 100m. Every single time out. It’s a little strange, because he has the body to be a good starter. But being a predominantly 200m sprinter for most of his career, I guess he hasn’t worked the explosive start enough.

Then again, if Bolt had been a better starter, he would have run under 9.50. He, however was a very tall, long guy, and fast starts aren’t generally a strength for that body type.

Maybe if he stops dancing around and beating his chest he could concentrate on the start of the race?

I'm not convinced Lyles can go much quicker than that. He seems to take a long time to build his speed and is more suited to 200m.

Thompson looks like he is capable of going quicker if he can improve his technique. If he doesn't tense up at the end of that race he likely wins it. But it was his first major championship, which is impressive.

If you were just to look at their body shapes, Thompson is pretty much the ideal for 100m and Lyles for 200m.

Thompson has a really sloppy and awkward looking running style once he’s up to full speed. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a guy run like that and still be so fast.

Lyles probably needs to pack some muscle on imo if he wants to improve his first 50m. He looks like he’s got far and away the best top end speed of anyone sprinting today, but he takes an age to get to it. A little more explosiveness to begin would have him be unbeatable like Bolt. Hard to see him doing that though, given he is already 27.

I don't think Lyles has the body frame to pack on more muscle than he has. And if he did, I believe it might hamper him from 60 meters onwards. If you look at the last 40, Lyles is much more relaxed than the others and that's what gets him the gold.

As for guys with sloppy running styles at full speed, Marcell Jacobs isn't much better than Thompson.

What’s interesting is Thompson has the second slowest starting reaction, only ahead of Lyles, but immediately gets to his top end speed and is leading by 30-40 metres. Lyles has a slow reaction and takes quite a while to hit his top speed so even though him and Thompson hit the same speed (40.6km/h) at 30-40 metres, he is significantly behind. But around 60 metres he is at a top speed of 43.6 km/h compared to Thompson’s 43.2 top speed and quickly catching up. If looking at last 70 metres of the race he smokes everyone by a good margin. I could see him improving to around 9.7 with a better start and more focus on the 100, and if he manages to break Bolt’s WR in the 200 we may see that.

The two Jamaicans are only 23 though and should have pretty bright futures ahead of them, seeing as both ran 9.8 or lower at this Olympics.

I don't believe he will.

But I do think he will run under 19.30 and that in itself is amazing.

That is insane. Does Lyles even feel like a winner in this race?
Well, he won. That helps in feeling like a winner.

There was very little reporting on, but as soon as I read that they were giving "prize money" to the Italian fighter she lost all credibility.

Let's be honest here: she threw away the fight and it looks like she got paid to do so. The IOC and the Italian justice department need to investigate her now.
