I want to unpack this idea of yours that "serving your country is noble".

First you say that it's not so bad because most people don't actually end up in combat so they just stay in the army for a while, get the benefits, and get out. Ie. they are getting a state funded job and an education while polishing state funded weapons and getting trained to use them. So how is this any different from other social spending and what makes this a "service" to your country exactly?

In the second case they are actually in combat trying to kill people. In Iraq, which is not remotely attempting to invade America. So again, what's noble about it?

That you're possibly putting your life in danger.

What do they protect? Their land, their homes? From who? Nothing but being the aggressors and invaders post world war 2. The patriotic mantra is one thing, but surely defending your country or freedom rhetoric becomes hallow when has no bearing whatsoever in reality. Reminds me of how the Romans justified their aggression.

It's not that straightforward. Do you think we should not have an army then? Just hope nothing happens?

We're not talking fair and your using two totally abstract arguments to try and make a point. The moral equivalent of a soldier who has no choice and a terrorist who does are completely different. Your what if scenarios mean shit in reality

I hate to see such silly opinions happen to smart people. Those people who just sit on their ass and get the education never risk their lives once. All they get is a job paid for by the forever complaining taxpayer who will later on go on to make arguments such as "we can't afford to pay for other people's education, let's cut funding for education".

Whereas those who are in combat are taking part in an invasion, an aggressive war. And they are risking their lives, but so what? In a way it would be even worse if they could just occupy some other country without ever being at risk, no?

I know man, studying this issue has been a hobby for two years and I spent an entire semester devoted to it on top of that - tragic history that seems to be continuing into the horizon.

So a soldier who's killing civilians had no choice, but a person who's defending his country, family is a terrorist, he needs to sit down and waits to be thrown out of his home, his children to be killed...

I agree that there is too much money going to the army. But voluntary service will always be better than mandatory imo. And I give props to the guys who volunteer. I know not all of them are good guys/girls but the majority of people I've met who have enlisted have been great people.
