Here's a couple of articles from SI on Canna winning the award.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/greg_lalas/11/27/cannavaro.golden/index.html

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/gabriele_marcotti/11/28/sheva/1.html

The second article has the story towards the bottom, it's amazing how two employee's can be so far apart in their opinions, one guy actually knows what he is talking about and the other is just a plain jackazz.

I'll let you guys figure out on your own which guy i think is jackazz.

Wenger ain't agreeing... what did you expect. He's so predictible. :moan:

Wenger: Henry deserved award, not Cannavaro

Arsene Wenger has insisted it was a 'mistake' not to name Arsenal captain Thierry Henry as European Player of the Year - and that the World Cup was 'lowest level' of football.

Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro took the prestigious Ballon D'Or - awarded by France Football magazine - ahead of countryman and Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, both of whom tasted success in Germany this summer.

France striker Henry, 29, meanwhile, was third - despite having helped Arsenal reach their first European Cup final and also reaching the World Cup final for a second time with Les Blues.

For Wenger, the decision was unjust.

'It is a mistake,' declared the Arsenal manager.

'It shows that the people who vote look only at the World Cup, which when you speak about elite football, in my opinion, is the lowest level in football that you can see at the moment.

'They make their decision on that.'

Wenger continued: 'If you see Italy playing against Togo or South Korea you cannot say that Cannavaro has a good game or even Thierry Henry has a good game, that he is the best player in the world - look at the players he plays against.

'To be consistent in a big championship like in England or in the Champions League for me would be much more appropriate than three weeks in the World Cup.'

not bad not bad

Comparing Cannavaro to a "rat scurrying off a ship" for leaving Juve this summer is wrong, too. Juventus took a huge financial hit, it had to cash in on its stars and keeping a 33-year-old (and his enormous wages) in Serie B when you know he won't be part of your future would have made no sense. It was Juve who chose to sell Cannavaro, not Cannavaro who chose to leave. Buffon, who is five years younger and a goalkeeper, is a wholly different issue.

That´s what I´m talking about, man, you cannot call someone a "traitor" if we didn´t want to keep him in the first place.

agreed but in the last game , i saw improvment in his form
He´s got more years left in his career than Cannavaro, I expect him to be as good as he was when he settles in the area.

Just yesterday he said he would say Zambrotta is playing like crap. He couldn't sleep I guess; all night he was thinking that what he said is a sin, he should do something about it. He couldn't say something bad about a Barca player, it is like the ultimate sin. He struggled, he sweat, he had the worst night ever, thinking what to do, how to do it, then at around 6:00 in the morning it all came to him. He'll sign in on the forums and say that Zambrotta is improving.

Now we'll have to see what he'll say about Thuram and Gudhonsen.

:agree:

Everyone should be objective about players, no matter if they play for Juventus or not (in his case Barcelona or not), otherwise that is not quality football talk.

When it comes to Barcelona fans, there is no objectivity.

Henry: "Cannavaro values nothing"

France striker Thierry Henry has accused Italy defender and Ballon d'Or winner Fabio Cannavaro of "valuing nothing" and being an unworthy champion. The Arsenal man claimed the Real Madrid centre back deliberately impeded him during the World Cup final, which Italy won on penalties.

"In Berlin Cannavaro put me out of the game in the first minute," Henry fumed. "It is clear he did it deliberately and great defenders don't behave in this way."

France lost the final on penalties, leaving Henry with a trophy-less season despite making it to the Champions League final with Arsenal.

"We were 50 metres from goal," he continued. "I left the ball and he pretended that he didn't see me coming. He did the same thing with (Franck) Ribery during France-Italy at the Stade de France (during the Euro 2008 qualifier, which France won 3-1)."

"For me a great defender must not play like this in such a big game; he values nothing."

"Great defenders are Laurent Blanc, Lilian Thuram, Paolo Maldini and Marcel Desailly, who were always really hard but correct."

French media, chairman of the FIFA Technical and Development Committee Michel Platini, France Foot magazine (who organise the Ballon d'Or) and a selection of French coaches and players have criticised the decision to award Cannavaro the trophy.

However, Henry won nothing in the 2005/6 season and the award normally goes to a triumphant player.

Henry still complaining:disagree: :p

What does he mean by putting him out of the game?
the collision between 2 of them at the very beginning of the match put him into unconsciousness for a while if u remember that scene, but I dont see thats the reason France were defeated in the final

You should assign Whinger-meter on every team to see who comes on top. I see Arsenal winnning the competition even before it begins.

Just to remind you Mr. Wenger,

He obviously forgot that little pesky Koreans (no offence meant Gray) huffed and puffed to get a draw against all glorious French. And didnt they hanged on for life towards the end. Oh I saw Togo giving France a right go for 45mins or so. World Cup indeed reached the lowest point when France and Swiss played out most dull match even God couldnt have imagined.

Yes Mr Wenger World Cup does indeed reach the lowest point of soccer calendar. And France are right in it too.

One glorious match against Brazil, a good match against Spain doesnt erase the fact beside those matches France were pretty mediocre all way long.

And Henry might just have won it had your team were not so fortunate enough that your rivals couldnt get a full team on because some bugs were in their stomach or Henry put on of many sitters he had in the final against Barca.

Correct. But I think Canna did that on purpose. He knows refs are not going to give yellow card in first 2mins of the game so he decided to teach Henry who is the daddy there.:D

Seeing Henry still griping about it, I think Canna has doen a good job.:toast: .

It was pity we didnt have Pietro Vierchwod on the pitch against Arsenal last year. Henry would have left the pitch crying - I bet my house on that.
