Grosso could return to form he has been better this season. And i don't think zaccardo is ever going to get much of a chance with the azzurri again. The only thing anybody remembers is that awful own goal agaisnt America no matter how he plays Don is to much of an idiot to select him.
I feel bad for Zaccardo. He made one mistake in a nothing game and he'll never live it down. The guy has improved quite a bit since then and has gained more poise and experience. He should be in the mix with Chiellini, Zambrotta, Grosso and Oddo.

I hope Palladino gets his cap and plays well... he's really in a tough position at Juventus with all the star forwards in his midst. Something like this could get him more notice and perhaps a few starts in his normal position.

Zaccardo deserves to be ahead of oddo who has had a shit season yet behind the other three. Palla is going to adapt his game to being a winger i think because thats were he gets the playing time. also what is up with Coda and Dossena at Udinese They are great players so underated.

Zoff: It’s A Pleasure To Be Overtaken By Cannavaro

1982 World Cup hero Dino Zoff has revealed that he feels honoured that Fabio Cannavaro is set to replace him as the second highest appearance-maker in the history of the Azzurri.

Following Saturday’s game against Scotland, Cannavaro is now level on 112 caps with Zoff.

If the Real Madrid defender plays against the Faroe Island’s tomorrow night he will move clear of Zoff and alone by himself into second place.

“It is my pleasure to be caught and overtaken by a great champion like Cannavaro,” said Zoff.

“The fact that Fabio has reached my number of Azzurri caps and will with every probability surpass me tomorrow is a great honour.

“We are not talking about just any old player, but an exemplary professional, bound to the Italy shirt, and always consistent with his behaviour on and off the field.”

Cannavaro is now 34-years-old but his form for Italy throughout most of the qualifying campaign has remained at the highest standard, and he was at his brilliant best during the recent qualifier with France in September.

Zoff, who himself lifted the World Cup in 1982 at the age of 40, believes that the Naples-born star can still continue playing at this level for a while yet.

“I believe that every season, you should look at your physical condition and question if you have the desire to keep on going. With Fabio I am convinced that he can keep on playing at these levels for another two to three years.”

Cannavaro, who famously won his 100th cap on the night Italy won the World Cup, is now only 14 appearances behind all-time record-holder Paolo Maldini.

    Don gives excluded Azzurri hope

Roberto Donadoni opened the door to new and old faces aiming for Euro 2008. “I have chosen all but four or five members of my squad.”

Italy are now qualified for next summer’s tournament and the race is on to be part of the 23-man side travelling to Austria and Switzerland.

“There are four or five places left to assign. The lads know what reasoning goes towards my decisions and how much I want to keep them motivated,” explained the Azzurri boss.

It is good news for both those who have been excluded recently – such as Alessandro Del Piero and Antonio Cassano – and newcomers like Giampaolo Pazzini, Alessandro Rosina and Raffaele Palladino.

The first opportunity for Juventus man Palladino to make his mark will be tomorrow’s final qualifier against the Faroe Islands, to be played at Modena’s Stadio Braglia.

“For this game I will take into account those who cannot really play two on the trot and the others who haven’t played much in qualifying. We will also make a few changes in terms of tactical systems.”

A victory will mathematically hand Italy top spot in Group B, regardless of France’s result in the Ukraine.

“This is an important game and we run the risk of underestimating it. It would be stupid to assume the match was already won, so I will send out players who are more motivated.”

Fabio Cannavaro could be rested to best prepare for Real Madrid’s upcoming fixtures, although that would postpone his 113th cap – overtaking the legendary Dino Zoff.

“I have spoken to Cannavaro and he told me he would like to play, but gave me the freedom to make my choice either way.”

For the first time since he took over, Donadoni feels secure in his job on the Azzurri bench and was asked if he ever felt abandoned during this difficult time.

“I had my staff and wish to thank them all – Bortolazzi, Bordon, Buso, Andreini, Riva and Vladovich. Did I feel dumped by FIGC President Giancarlo Abete? When you see your future depends on one match, certain thoughts do rush to your head.

“But no, I never felt dropped. Just once Abete said something publicly that he later clarified and we sorted out amongst ourselves.”

Donadoni’s contract runs to the end of Euro 2008, but a good tournament could see him extend that stay.

“Of course if Abete proposed an extension I would be a liar if I said it wouldn’t please me. But that’s not on my mind right now.”

    Toni's Italy homecoming

Luca Toni is eager to impress his hometown crowd as Italy face the Faroe Islands in Modena, while Gigi Buffon warns not to underestimate this match.

The Azzurri are already qualified for Euro 2008, but need a victory tomorrow evening to be certain of topping Group B ahead of France.

“We will try to end the campaign on a high, playing as well as we have done throughout,” said Bayern Munich striker Toni.

“It will be great to win and finish ahead of France, but this game will be particularly special for me because I am from Modena.”

The encounter will be at Modena’s Stadio Alberto Braglia and a party atmosphere is expected for the hometown hero.

With this also in mind, teammate Buffon wants to ensure the fans get their money’s worth when Italy come to town.

“We are facing a fairly weak opponent on paper, but to honour the crowd I think it is crucial to play with the right attitude,” said the goalkeeper.

Buffon may be one of those rested for this game, as Coach Roberto Donadoni begins to test out alternatives for his 23-man squad going to next summer’s tournament.

“I think that in certain cases it is right to think about the group and make everyone happy. It doesn’t cost anything to sit out games occasionally.

“I am happy I’m not the Coach going to a European Championships. Italy always make their mark in the big occasions and it went well last time, so we hope to do the same in Austria and Switzerland,” added the World Cup winner.

Few Choices Left To Make - Donadoni

Italy coach Roberto Donadoni revealed he has pretty clear ideas on who he will take to Austria and Switzerland for Euro 2008.

The run-up to Euro 2008 has already begun. From tomorrow's game against the Faroe Islands onwards, every opportunity will be a good one for Italy coach Roberto Donadoni to decide which 23 players he will take to Austria and Switzerland. But the coach admits there aren't that many places available as his squad is already more or less outlined.

"I still have about 4-5 choices to make," he revealed, "the lads know the logic that determines my choices, and that I want to keep the motivation high."

After publicly thanking his staff, Donadoni launched a message to Figc President Giancarlo Abete: "For now I'm not thinking about the contract renewal, but if he were to make a proposal... it would certainly please me. I've never had any problems with him, except for one misunderstanding once which was quickly resolved."

Italy qualified to Euro 2008 after last weekend's 2-1 win over Scotland in Glasgow, and will host the Faroe Islands on Wednesday night in their final qualifier, hoping to confirm their first place in Group B ahead of France with a win.

Totti: There Will Definitely Be No Azzurri Comeback

Francesco Totti has for the xth time insisted that he won't be donning the blue shirt of Italy ever again...

Roma captain and Italian World Cup winner Francesco Totti has once again stated that he won't be making a comeback for the national team.

He told Fox Sports, "I understand the rules of the group and out of respect for that I would never think of returning to the Azzurri squad.

"After quitting when we won the World Cup I was asked by the federation to think about it.

"But when I told them at the start of the season, that was that. I never reconsidered."

Totti has been half-heartedly linked with a return to the side on several occasions since retiring after last summer's World Cup final win over France, and even fuelled the fires of speculation himself on occasion.

As recently as October 1st, he said that the idea of playing in the World Cup of 2010 in South Africa was an appealing one, but this latest statement seems to have closed the door on that possibility.

Italy have already sealed safe passage to Euro 2008. They take on the Faroe Islands tonight in Modena in a bid to retain top spot in qualifying Group B.

Netherlands To Face Azzurri In Friendly

The Netherlands have seemingly arranged a pre-Euro 2008 friendly with Italy, along with matches against Ukraine, Belgium and Denmark...

The showpiece of the Oranje's Euro 2008 preparation campaign is surely their mooted meeting with Italy, slated to take place in February.

With the Azzurri set to join the Dutch outfit in Austria and Switzerland next summer, the test match will be no less important for coach Donadoni's men as they look to win their second successive major tournament.

For Marco van Basten's side, this is just the start of a four-game series of matches that will see the Dutch welcome Denmark, Ukraine and neighbours Belgium to the low country.

Two of the fixtures will be played in Rotterdam, while the other will be at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven.

The Dutch take on Belarus tonight in Minsk with qualification already assured, while Italy will cement top spot in Group B with a victory over the Faroe Islands in Modena.

    Italy Basking In Post-Qualification Glory

Last Saturday’s 2-1 victory against Scotland in Glasgow was a highly memorable one for every Italian football fan. Roberto Donadoni’s men won a vitally important and highly-anticipated encounter with a convincing performance, despite a very dodgy performance by the officials.

Italy needed only to avoid defeat at Hampden Park to virtually ensure their place at next summer’s European Championship finals, while Scotland needed to win at all costs. The Azzurri had never won in Scotland, and the Scots had a 100% home record in these qualifiers.

However, as the game began Italy immediately showed they meant business, and took the lead in only the second minute with a close-range tap-in by Luca Toni from a cross by Antonio Di Natale.

The Azzurri continued to play more convincingly in the first half, and had the ball in the net again around the half hour mark, but Di Natale’s close-range strike was incorrectly, as it showed on TV replays, ruled out for offside.

In the second half, Scotland started to put more pressure on the World Champions, and found an equaliser around the hour mark after Gigi Buffon failed to hold on to a close range shot, captain Barry Ferguson eventually tapping it in. However, replays showed he was narrowly offside.

In the final part of the match, Scotland were galvanised and created their best chances of the match. James McFadden could have won it for the Scots in the 80th minute, but he blasted his shot incredibly wide with the goal gaping. Eventually, Italy got a deserved winner as defender Christian Panucci headed in a free kick by Andrea Pirlo in injury time, although the set piece came courtesy of a wrong decision by the referee.

That decision was what angered the Scots at the end, but in all fairness had the referees, and specifically the linesmen, done their job properly the score would have been 2-0 to Italy just before that free kick. In the end, justice was done, and Italy showed once again that when games that matter come along, they rarely fail.

After a very rough start under coach Roberto Donadoni, when Italy were forced to play international matches before the league even began and got just one point from their first two games against Lithuania and France, they are now on an unbeaten run in their last nine official matches, of which they have won eight.

Now they are rightly enjoying the glorious victory in Scotland, and are looking good bets to go all the way next year in Austria and Switzerland as well. Perhaps the only downside of that result was that they also ensured Scotland would be knocked out and thus that France will take part in the tournament. And now Les Bleus once again look like Italy’s biggest threat.

    Threats From All Sides

However, it’s clear that there will be many highly competitive sides, and looking at the teams who have qualified and those which will probably qualify on Wednesday (England and Portugal only needing to avoid home defeats to go through), it will certainly be a very tough competition, as all the big teams will be there and there are no surprise packages like Latvia or Bulgaria at Euro 2004.

With speculation already rife as to what the Euro 2008 groups will look like, you'd almost forget that Italy still have one more qualification game left. Most likely, in this final game against the Faroe Islands, who have failed to pick up a single point in their campaign, Donadoni will opt to give some younger players a chance.

The likes of Fabio Quagliarella, and Juventus striker Raffaele Palladino, who will probably make his debut in this one, look set to get some playing time here.

Although a victory for Italy, which would seal first place in this “Group of Death”, should be inevitable, it remains to be seen if they can turn it into a goalfest. In this qualifying campaign Italy have scored more than twice in a single match on just one occasion, away to Georgia, where they won 3-1.

Even against the Faroe Islands, who conceded 11 goals in two matches against France, they suffered towards the end, and escaped with a 2-1 away win courtesy of a brace by Filippo Inzaghi. Had it not been for a good save by Gigi Buffon towards the end, the Faroes could have celebrated a heroic 2-2 draw after going 2-0 down.

However, the scene seems set for a big party in Modena to celebrate Italy’s qualification, and the Azzurri should be able to win by at least three goals.

    TEAM NEWS

    Italy

There were no injuries after last weekend’s game in Glasgow, but Donadoni looks set to rest a few big-name players for this match, including keeper' Buffon, Gattuso, goalscorers Toni and Panucci.

Possible formation (4-3-3): Amelia; Grosso, Cannavaro, Barzagli, Chiellini; Pirlo, De Rossi, Perrotta; Palladino, Gilardino, Quagliarella.

    Faroe Islands

The Faroes have a full squad available as they did not have to play last weekend.

Possible formation (4-4-2): Mikkelsen; E. Hansen, J.R. Jacobsen, Benjaminsen, O. Hansen; Jespersen, Samuelson, Elttor, Olsen; C. Jacobsen, R. Jacobsen.

    PLAYERS TO WATCH

    Alberto Gilardino (Italy) :wth:

The inconsistent Milan striker found the net just once in these qualifiers, although it turned out to be the most pointless goal of all, in the 3-1 loss in France. So far this season, it’s been up and down for Gilardino, who usually does well in games that end up in big wins for Milan, but almost never manages to score decisive goals, much unlike his team mate Inzaghi. Perhaps a good performance and possibly a goal in this game can give the player a morale boost ahead of the Rossoneri's next games, where he will be expected to score more consistently.

    Rogvi Jacobsen (Faroe Islands)

This striker managed to do what seemed impossible, that is to make a Faroe Islands-Italy match suspenseful. After Inzaghi had given Italy a 2-0 lead, Jacobsen reduced it to 2-1 with 13 minutes left with a great header, making it a nervous last 10 minutes for the World Champions. Will he able to repeat his feat of scoring against Italy? The 28-year-old would certainly fancy it, although it will undoubtedly be a tougher task this time around.

    PREDICTION

Italy to make up for their low goalscoring record in this one.

    Italy-Faroe Islands 4-0
