The word for teach is more formal, and more associated with the teaching profession, as my understanding goes. And even so more used for the word lesson (unterricht meaning lesson)

In german for example, you say Ich lerne Englisch, Er lern mir Englisch (I learn english, he learns me english)

Basically to summarize in the German language Learn substitutes Teach for all intents and purposes.

To say I teach you would say: Ich gebe Unterichten ( I give lessons basically)
