The word for teach is more formal, and more associated with the teaching profession, as my understanding goes. And even so more used for the word lesson (unterricht meaning lesson)

In german for example, you say Ich lerne Englisch, Er lern mir Englisch (I learn english, he learns me english)

Basically to summarize in the German language Learn substitutes Teach for all intents and purposes.

To say I teach you would say: Ich gebe Unterichten ( I give lessons basically)
well, I'm not an expert, but in German you say "Lernen" for "to learn" and "Lehren" is to teach.

So, Ich lerne English indeed, but I'd say "Er lehrt mir English for he learns me English.

So you're saying that because in German and every Germanic language it is so, we should be excused from using the correct term? Why?

Well im quite awful with langauges, but I would say no: Lehrer is Teacher, like Arzt is Doctor. Its a profession, not a verb.

Its a wholly understandable mistake, I've heard the best use it. My explanation for it is probably a little wayward considering I've been revising my arse yesterday and had a severe lack of sleep last night :(

No, your explanation makes sense. It's just like Dutch people use make way too much. They will say "I have to make the test". It's an understandable mistake. But as long as our standards are a decent command of the language, why should it be excusable?

Btw what you gonna be when you grow up?

No, my avatar has completely different purposes. It's an inside joke in school. Very adolescent. Anyway, I am good with my words, I like writing, I can weave stories well and am generally very eloquoant with my speech, if I try anyway.

No, there's no excuse for that avatar :p
:D Sorry

well i write poetry short stories and have elobarate plans for bigger novels, when the time and the energy finds me one day. Basically I would like to write feudal war epics, set in fictional worlds, but limiting myself to that is not my idea of fun, you become a Jane Austen if you do (where you rip off your own books) but I have about 2 great ideas ahead of me for books like that.

Lehren is a verb. It's true however that it's less used than the English to teach.

For example, you use lehren for a professor teaching in university, but a teacher "unterrichtet" in school.
