Fernando Couto Heading To Jail?
Parma’s veteran Portuguese centre-back Fernando Couto is liable to a jail sentence of up to six months if found guilty of doping charges.
The stiff sentence is being sought by the Florence prosecution service and will also carry a 50,000 Euro fine.
Fernando Couto is accused of having consciously taken prohibited substances after a standard test before a Fiorentina-Lazio (while playing for the Biancocelesti) match almost exactly six year ago.
The player tested positive on the 28th of January 2001 in a random doping test carried out on a selection of players from both teams, giving the only red flag that day.
On that occasion he was eventually suspended, not for the 16 months the prosecution service then demanded, but was banned for 10 months, although the sentence served was only 5 months as the player’s lawyers followed the Edgar Davids precedent.
The case is still being dragged through the courts, although now a final verdict date has been set for the 2nd of April 2007.
Ex-Lazio president Ugo Longo is standing firmly behind the player who can also count on an all-clear in a follicle sample collected from Couto’s ample poodle mane.
