That flag there, John, is that a silent protest against Turkey's EU membership talks?
It's a protest at the appointment of a novice international manager who was given a four year contract so the FAI couldn't afford to fire him when he achieved the most embarrasing result in Irish history, a defeat you have to go back to the 1930s to find another example of, and which had previously only been doled out on us by top class nations. It stays there until we qualify for a major tournament.

Looking at the numbers you bolded, it all makes sense. Can you get the same info for Sweden and USA?

you should end your protest, since Germany got an away draw to cyprus too. Seems they are on form and causing troubles, and not entierly your manager's fault.

Oh right, you actually told me that on the day after that defeat but I forgot. My bad :pint:

I got this from dinside.no, I guess they didn't have the same data for other countries or they would have published it.

Well obviously, but if you don't consider polls worthwhile then much of our statistics are suddenly useless.

I think that the win over us helped there - big boost in confidence. You rarely concede 5 to Brazil when they're on form. Cyprus, never.

I don't consider them worthless. I just chose to be cautious about the results.

Thought experiment: you walk into a class of 15 year old boys, and conduct a straw poll on who has ever kissed a girl. Before you're arrested for your behaviour, what percentage do you think will honestly admit in front of their friends that they haven't? Bias, bias everywhere, and no one 'round to think.

That's not the point. I rather doubt that the European Commission for Drug Prevention or whatever the organization is walked into a group and asked people out loud if they had ever taken drugs. Anonymous surveys are the way you do this. Sure there will still be errors, but people have far less incentive to lie.

I didn't mean to suggest that they did. Kids will still lie. I think I read a survey about it once (seriously!). Now I don't know which survey to believe. :depressed

Have you ever taken one of those surveys in school? There was a point at which they became popular and we did quite a few of them every year. I recall I was fairly honest on those, although if there was anything negative to admit, I would much more likely understate it than overstate.
