ale has always been the scapegoat and never really had the support that he deserved, sure he got chances to shine, but badluck in 98, as had he not been injured before that tournament he would have shined, and its not just serie A, del piero was untill recently the holder of most goals in one season in the champions league (10) and was and still is high in the list of all time top scorers, to say he never did it in europe isnt true, he scored some great goals and was phenomenal in the 1998 season destroying monaco in the semi's, as well as this he has 26 goals for the azzurri, the most of any currently active player, I understand what you are saying though, he doesnt do enough these days to merrit his status, but he is a true champion who gives his 100% everytime, and he has my respect for that

Pavel Nedved faces many of his Juventus teammates on Thursday and Gianluca Zambrotta has warned him not to con the referee.
“It’s not true that Pavel is a serial diver, but if he does try to get clever, I’ll deal with him,”
smiled the full-back ahead of the crunch match in Group E.
Zambrotta returned from a thigh injury and was one of the Azzurri’s best players in the much-criticised 1-1 draw against the United States, but he assures the fans have reason to remain optimistic, as a draw is enough to see them through.
“We have two results at our disposal to reach the final 16, so we’re not worried. Obviously, this team started out to win the World Cup and that’s what we continue to hope, but there can be many factors involved in picking the winner.”
Marcello Lippi blamed the poor performance against America on complacency caused by the Italian media’s excessive praise after the Ghana win
, but the Press has now gone in completely the opposite direction.
“What irritates me is the fact that there is no balance when it comes to talking about the Nazionale in Italy,” added Zambrotta. “After the 2-0 over Ghana it was as if we were already in the Final, then just five days later we’re treated like minnows making their World Cup debut. However, the former Bari man could also use this World Cup as a shop window, as he refused to commit his future to Juventus with the Calciopoli scandal still hanging over their heads.
“Juve are one of the greatest clubs in the football firmament and I have a contract until 2010. I haven’t decided anything yet, as we’ll have to wait and see the verdicts and what the club’s intentions are. Real Madrid are interested in me? I concur that Del Piero cannot be compared Roberto Baggio for what he has done for Italy, however people still use Alex as the scapegoat far too many times, which usually comes around once the supposed conspiracy theories against the Azzurri cool down. People do have a point when they say Del Piero has usually been on the bench when each of these tournaments began, which means you do not have sufficient information to judge him as a starter for the Azzurri.
But then again people are correct when they say Del Piero has not done much for Italy in major competitions, so it works both ways.

Regardless...I have never been forcefed to believe Gila was the next Baggio...I was never forcefed the notion that Pirlo will win it for us...but all I hear year after year is DP when in fact he has contributed the least and been named the most..it takes away from players that deserve mention: Cannavaro, Nesta, Pirlo, etc.

On my list of respected players he ranks up there for his class, sportsmanship and loyalty: people like Totti, Cassano and Shevchenko (loyalty wise) should learn from Alex. However, pointing to one season in which he did well is fine if we are talkign about why Cristiano Zanetti is not a total waste..but if you are going to pump a player up like Moggi has done with Del Piero then you better have international records to show for it: Baggio, Stoichkov, Romario, Ronaldo, Baresi, Maldini all have it...if you want to utter DP in the same breath then its time to demonstrate..
I know there are huge DP fans like Azzurri and Vinman..I don't mean to be little the player and I would want nothing more than for him to prove me wrong and score like there is no tomorrow unfortunately, I lost all confidence in him scoring because I have never seen him attain the same pace internationally as he has in Serie A...I would love for Alex to be our generations Paolo Rossi but I really doubt it will happen...
We need to win as a team...we have firepower: Toni, Gila, Inzaghi and Iaquinta coupled with Totti, Pirlo and yes Del Piero can do a sh*t load of damage...we have depth, we have talent...we need for it to come out..enough of this last minute gasps to pass through rounds....enough with the excuses and enough with the catenaccio .... for once I want to see Italy take an early lead and continue to attack..

int:The thing I don't get about Del Piero is that while it's clear he doesn't perform in all these improvised roles coaches come up with for him, they're still very reluctant, past and present, to let him play in his normal position. I mean either play him as second forward or drop him already, how hard is that? Why on earth would you take a player like Del Piero, who's one of the best Italian forwards, with an extremely well known history of struggling in the national team, and not try to get the best out of him? Yes, he did a fine job against Holland in 2000 on the right wing. Aside from that, when has he ever excelled in a strange role?
To me it's a clear choice. Either pick Del Piero because the media wants you to or you like him or for whatever reason, and play him up front alongside a Toni, and pray that this time will be the time he does for Italy what he does at club level (which these days is a far cry from a footballing genius) oooor don't pick him, pick an actual midfielder.

Today an Italian told me he hopes Czech beats Italy and Italy does not make the next round because of the presence of Juve and Milan players on the team and the fact they are corrupt...
I had to laugh it off or I would have ripped his head off...apart from players not being guilty for actions of the board I asked him whether it had to do with the fact that NO INTER PLAYERS apart from Hack-a-razzi was on the team making their contribution sweet fvck all...
Though not as open as him I see many Interisti as very critical of the team ... what a sad bunch of fvckers...

Do you risk benching Gilardino and putting Del Piero knowing his history and the current mind set....what happens IF he fizzles (which history suggests will happen)??

Raul scored today for Spain as a second half substitute.
He kinda reminds me of DP in many ways with their playing styles, what they represent to their club teams, and the same sort of situation the both of them are in....many ppl feel they are past their prime and have little left to give...hell, they even look a bit like they could be related !!
