No, Nick, Del Piero deserved every spot. What you're trying to do now is just laughable. Del Piero is one of Italy's best scoring strikers and has been vital in a lot of qualifying campaigns.

Del Piero scored five goals in today's training while Inzaghi scored six. You'll be eating your words soon enough Nick. I guess you'll be glad to do so anyway.

Del Piero easily deserves his spot. Don't tell me Alex is less of an asset than friggin Iaquinta.
It's the same every time really. Italy does bad, it's all Del Piero's fault. The poor guy didn't even start FFS.

I dont take into too much account the training ground games...

before the USA game, all the strikers were putting them away in those games, and none could deliver when it counted against the USA

I'm sure it matters to Del Piero and Pippo though.

And it's not like Del Piero has been that poor. It seems like sometimes people care more about bashing him rather than taking out the frustration on people who deserve it - the Roma players.

I said it a year ago that you might as well just drop Totti from the National Team, and he continues to fuck around. I think he deserves more of the blame than Del Piero after his ridiculous antics the past half decade.

Yes, you're completely right. Totti carries the hope of the nation and spits it away, yet Del Piero (!) is blamed for his bad performances. Del Piero plays well in 2002, but gets subbed out after which Italy are only half as good, yet Del Piero (!) is called one of the main culprits. I still think Del Piero was one of the best Italians against the USA as well, at least he created some, be it small, chances.

I bet Pippo must be thinking "what the fuck do I have to do to get a chance to play ??"
Lippi admitted he should have put him on against the USA though. That must have boosted Pippo's confidence. The more I look at the group the more I think Ghana and Italy will go through. I can't see the US beating Ghana, simply because the Ghanaians are brimming with confidence.

I don't think the US lack confidence, but their problem is scoring goals. They don't have a decent finisher, it appears.
It's gonna be tight. For all 4 teams.

Tell me what he has done for Italy ..INTERNATIONAL IN COMPETITIONS SINCE his first stint ...

He has been branded as the MOST TALENTED PLAYER in Italian football after Baggio..is it possible that EVERY SINGLE TOURNAMENT there is an excuse for his game or lack of it.
Sorry but expectations were high he has never come close to living up to it..in fact, he was nothing more than a Casiraghi in internation competitions

To be honest..no one cares..I can't blame him because he is such a non factor on the team. he is like a third sub for me....I don't expect ANYTHING FROM HIM but sportsmanship and class ... so when he does sweet fvck all its expected. When he does score people never hear the end of it I mean people still have the Mexico goal in their avatar all over web forums....

People treat him like a Camoranesi or another average run of the mill Azzurri player as if to say : he played well..he tried..he created. FVCK THAT. Where is that greatness and talent we are promised year after year...where is that comparison to Baggio we always get...where is that GOD like status he gets year after year...I'll tell you where: IN SERIE A...not in Europe and not in Italy...and his team for which he has played for over 10 years is under investigations for selecting favorable refs in Serie A and having journalists on their payroll to pump up the team...is it really a surprise then that he is like a lost puppy in international tournaments ..NO?

    MOGGI RUINED HIM....clear and simple.

Pado..that goal was offside...it is offside in Italy..it is offside in England and offside in Antartica...not only was the player offside and interfering he also tried to tap it in...PLEASE.
Right. All I said was that some referees would have let the goal stand. You just get so many interpretations of the passive offside rule that it's best not to leave it to . . . say an overweight Ecudorian named Moreno, for example.

Not to sound like a "yes man", but I'm afraid I have to agree here. Del Piero has done virtually nothing in International Competitions. He certainly can't be compared to what Baggio had accomplished, especially considering that Baggio's injury situation was exactly the same, if not worse. Remember that severly pulled hamstring in WC '94, when he shouldn't have even been on the pitch for the last two matches??

One of the most vivid memories of that tournament was Roberto being hooked up to muscle stimulation devices on that leg of his.

    KNOW YOUR STATS...
EVEN IF DEL PIERO didn't score that goal Italy would have gotten through because Ecuador came through so the Mexico goal was nothing more than a highlight video for his career or lack of it with Italy...
Qualifications?? Dino Baggio made us get through to WC 94 ... Del Piero was pumped as the next baggio..sorry but I expect more than a few good shots from someone who is assured a spot in the NT year after year...

If Moggi was not behind the scenes all these years I really doubt DP would even be at the WC ... God knows what kind of back room push and shove was done to guarantee his spot on the NT tournament after tournament despite contributing less than Nicola Berti in 94
the problem is that before every major tourement all italy start the discusion if DP should start and no coach, never started a tourement with DP as a starter. DP must start the game as a support striker in order to get the best of him. Lippi made a mistake against the US by bringing Iaquinta, he should have brought Camo and let DP play as a striker. DP was not able to do anything against US because he was supposed to play as a playmaker but no one was moving around, and the back 4 were all behind, but DP still was the best in the second half...
