It will not give the MLS world wide soccer recognition..it will give the soccer in the US recognition. HOw long...until the johnny-come-lately fans stop buying the hype. It begins with the GAME ...not a big name. If they don't feel for the game no one will get them hooked.
Instead of investing the money into young players or maybe (long shot/pipe dream) signing YOUNG talents and daring to entice someone like Messi or Adriano to sign it signs a player who is all about 'marketing' and 'hype'. Sorry Sergio, I would love nothing more than for US soccer and the MLS to strive..Andy and Burke have proven me wrong on the US Team (which I admitted) and made me appreciate the team a bit more. That said, this is not the way to bring the league par to par with European levels. How could Beckham say no?? Add L.A. into the picture with the superficial happiness someone like Beckham lives for and you have the perfect 'haven' for him.
NASL failed after bringing in the big names Pele, Chinaglia, Beckenbauer, etc. Do you think Beckham coming over to the MLS will entice a player like Kaka or Buffon to join the Red Bulls because suddenly Beckham gives it credibility. Not by a long shot. If they keep throwing the money at players some who see their career coming to an end may make the jump but those that play to compete will not give it a thought.

This is where you are incorrect, my man.

This is not MLS' main objective, to make their league on par with European Leagues. Their objective is to advance the sport in the United States, and as great as it would seem to be able to sign a Messi or an Adriano, they HAD to make a big splash just to even get the brand name mentioned in the news in the first place.

Look, Beckham is not the best player they could have gotten if you want to look at it from strictly a talent level, but as far as marketing, and recognition, you cannot do any better than the most recognizable sports personality in the world.

And Nick, I'm pretty sure you remember the fitness and skill levels of those players you mentioned from the yesteryear of the NASL. Quite frankly, they had far less in the tank than Beckham does.

This is all you had to say.

I've only read this page, but no one has mentioned the ridiculously large pool of players growing in the USA. Relatively, far more kids here are involved in development programs, while, from what I've seen at least, in Italy the kids just kick the ball about in the streets. I trained with the juventus 1990 youth team when I was 12, and absolutely no question they were all much better than me, but the difference wasn't astronomical. Take aside the fact that they are the most select group of kids, Italy doesn't seem to have many players lying around. I might be wrong since my estimates are only made based on my own experiences, but when I went to a village in the alps last year, I was certainly the best player anywhere near the calcietto(excuse my spelling) court there, and here I'm only a bit above average.

Overtime, with the amount of money invested into our youth's most popular sport, it has to eventually go somewhere. This could explain the recent signings of several americans over to the EPL, though I think far more will be coming in the next few years. That said, I'm not claiming we'll surpass europe, but I don't think it's too hard to at least sufficiently raise the rather sad level of MLS from 5 years ago.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -- Former England captain David Beckham sought the advice of his actor friend Tom Cruise before agreeing his big-money move from Real Madrid to Los Angeles Galaxy worth $1 million a week over five years.

"I was on the phone to him (Cruise) for about an hour last night and an hour the night before," Beckham told reporters on Friday.

But that would make no sense. I can assure you no fringe hick possible MLS supporter would know who Lionel Messi is, however there is indeed a chance they would have heard of David Beckham. His name is even plastered all over shows such as Entertainment Tonight, whose reporters bust all over their reports about how much style the Becks family actually has. Hell, I was watching Fox News earlier (for the laughs) and they had a ten minute segment on this whole transfer and asked some British specialist what the hell the guy is doing. It makes the news, and when things make the news in this country, people are going to listen. It's completely sickening how some of the fashion freaks go gaga over this retarded couple, but in the end it might also help the MLS.

So I don't see any point of signing someone such as Cassano... YET. Plant the SEED before you go in for the kill, Neeeeeega.

Andy and Burke have proven me wrong on the US Team (which I admitted) and made me appreciate the team a bit more.
Thank you for admitting the fact. And come on, you should give a little care about how your own team does on the international stage...

That said, this is not the way to bring the league par to par with European levels. How could Beckham say no?? Add L.A. into the picture with the superficial happiness someone like Beckham lives for and you have the perfect 'haven' for him.
Dude, this is not about bringing the MLS to the European levels as you and I know that will not happen over night. As a matter of fact, it probably will not happen for decades if even that. This Beckham saga is about garnering more fans and increasing revenue, which the MLS needs without question. Moreover, I feel that Beckham will draw more people from Europe to "watch" the game in the states, as he probably has friends in high places. And when that is the case, things get accomplished no matter how wrong they are. I wouldn't be surprised if you see some sort of gay ass MLS fashion nonsense which would help the league as a whole. But what do I care, I'd bomb venues if it meant the USA would become a power in world football, wouldnt I.

Please respond to my first post on this subject which addresses this issue of comparing the MLS to NASL.

Tom Cruise blasts people for using anti-depressants. He is also a firm believer in Scientology. The only advice I would seek from such a person is how to kill myself, because that's what Tom Cruise would be doing if he was not a millionaire.

Heard the rumor on two Italian talk shows (radio). Also told it was rumored on two sports shows in Italy.

"Don't be surprised to see Santa deliver a big name like Del Piero, although it might take six months for that gift to arrive."

SOURCE: http://soccernet.espn.go.com/columns/story?id=397076&root=mls&cc=5901

He has been saying it for some time:

"When I leave Juventus I don't see myself playing with Fiorentina or Sampdoria - I see myself with Los Angeles Galaxy."

If he still would like to play, it would certainly be a good move. However, if he loves Juventus, which I'm fairly certain he does, he will stick around and eventually become President of the club. He's not like Beckham and goes wherever his greed/wife takes him.

I'd watch a summary or two if it involved some Dutch players so I guess the MLS will be partially watched by English people the coming season. In summary, every once in a while...

But hey, small steps. Only responsible way to move forward.

The persona of Beckham on American pitches isn't going to create any viewers on Continental Europe and in Scotland though :D

Teacher Found Guilty of Endangering Kids Due to Spyware

nursegirl writes "Norwich, Conn seventh grade teacher, Julie Amero has been convicted of four counts of risk of injury to a minor after her classroom PC displayed pornographic pop-ups in class. While an expert for the defendant said he had discovered spyware on her PC that had been downloaded from a hairstyling site, the local police investigator claimed that the spyware had been downloaded from actively visiting porn sites. Amero testified that she had told four other teachers and the assistant principal about the popups, but received no assistance. The school's internet filtration software was not working because it's license had expired. Amero faces up to forty years in prison."

why would i care about his nationaly? i just dont like the notion of people making bussiness out of football. maybe im an old school guy but i love it when clubs are in touch with their roots. be it agnellis or morattis. its just beautiful. while americans glazers, russians abramovich's and lithuanian ivanovs at hearts just dont look right..

better than fc united obviously..
if its done correctly then there are no reasons why a man who has no connection to teh club cannot do well. teh problem starts when they try and treat a football club like a normal business and does not realise that fans ahve connections to both players and stadia.

take the situation at hearts right now, we were more successful than we ahd been in 8 years last season but still there is unrest, mr romanov then sacks club captain and legend steven pressley who then gets teh offer to join celtic and sort out their backline. last season we had the best defense in the league, now one of our CB is at celtic, one has wormed his way to rangers and teh best scottish keeper in a long time is being lined up by several clubs, this would not be so bad if mr romanov didnt replace them with 3rd rate lithuianians (nerisus barasa is a prop forward, never a RB)

thesolo asks: "Despite past efforts of the 1970s and 1980s, the United States remains one of only three countries (others are Liberia and Myanmar) that does not use the metric system

When it's just you, Liberia and Myanmar, that should tip you off...
