A good point. But I do remember that, in 1991, Diego Maradonna was crucified in the English-language press for being a "drug addict that needs to disappear into some dark back alley and overdose on something so that we don't have to think about him anymore". While, in the exact same issue of the same publications it was written that we must pity our beloved George Best, who had destroyed his liver and his health with an alochol addiction. That we should all line up and donate our livers to this fallen icon of sport.

Unequal treatment for similar maladies. The reason? I always suspected it was that one was Argentine and the other British. You cannot say that it was because of stature as a footballer, because they were two of the greatest ever.
the answer is plain and simple for that
mradonna is hated beyond all reason by the english media because of the hand of god goal in 86. they have always found ways to blame everyone but themselves for exiting world cups, diving opponents, evil keepers stopping their penalties, referee's who chop off goals when the keeper is blatantly being fouled.... they still think of diego not as probably the greatest player to have played dthe game but a cheat, so if they can highlight his bloated, drug addicted face all over their media it justifies their hatred to themselves in a "look, he is a junkie, he only beat us by cheating" kind of way.

before the world cup i watched da programme that counted down the greatest world cup goals of all time and his solo effort against england was only no.3, when they cut to the interviews with "people in the know" there was one guy (never seen him before) who could only say "dirty, cheating little bastard" about the great man.

there is not the level of hatred extended to argentina as there was 20 years ago, however it seems the english media (not the english people i must stress) still bear an almighty chip on their shoulder about maradonna's first goal, to the extent they are blinded by the enormous quality of his second

All this fuss over something that is inconsequential and in the past. Who cares...let Zidane retire in peace. Italy lifted the trophy anyway; don't you think that's painful enough?
It's not about Zidane nor is it about Materazzi, Andy.

There are just several things that really bother me about this incident:

To begin with Zidane called the ref of the semi-final against Portugal a son of a bitch. The ref heard this, because he himself made said so after the WC. Whilst I think verbal insults on a football pitch should be taken with a pinch of salt ( after all you try to hype up 22 grown men in the shape of their lives and act all surprised when one of them gets agressive) this should have been a red given Materazzi's two match ban.

Secondly no one has ever been punished for provoking. What exactly was their evidence anyway? They must have taken Zidane's word for it, right? And why was Poulsen not punished after the incident with Totti? Is it because Totti is deemed a rather dirty player and Zidane a clean one? That's a non-argument since Zidane took no less than 12 direct red cards in his career.

Thirdly there is the number of games they are banned. Materazzi two and Zidane three? That's absolutely ridiculous. De Rossi got a four match ban after a mere elbow (it's not worse because it's bleeding you know) and Zidane gets three after one of the more violent attacks ever seen on the world stage? Not to mention that they give him the freaking golden ball afterwards? What kind of example are they setting? That it's wrong to provoke, but that it's alright to lash out at people?

Truth be told Zidane's mother must have really been a hooker. Why else would he have been that offended? NO ONE and I mean NO ONE gets offended of that yo mama shit unless she really is what they say she is. And we all know about the lack of class of Zidane's mom.

EDIT: this of course in no way changes Zidane's wonderful career. I still rate him in the top 5 of best players ever.

Why do you keep bringing up Poulsen? Are you still hang up on that? Materazzi I can understand, it's fairly recent, but the Poulsen thing has been beaten to death ages ago. Is that what you base your entire "Fifa's anti-Italian bias" argument on? One example isn't exactly a strong basis.

As for Zidane's mom, only thing I heard about her was some statement saying she wanted Materazzi's head, which was stupid. But then she's entitled to be somewhat baised, no? Anything further I leave to Materazzi to say about her, apparently he knows something.

"Voglio i testicoli di Materazzi su un piatto." was what I read. Now Materazzi's not a goodlooking guy, but saying his head looks like ... is quite an overstatement.

I just bring up Poulsen because it's the most obvious one. There over a thousand other examples. I don't think there has ever been a player that headbutted someone without provocation.

So maybe she was offended. Is she the first person to say something stupid to the press? She's not bound by sporting rules of conduct, she can say whatever she wants. Materazzi didn't deliver his message to the papers, but he conveyed it through Zidane. For all you know it was an eye for an eye response, so why not blast Materazzi for starting it? If I insult your mother just to wind you up, nevertheless the insult still stands, it's not magically wiped off the record. Just that it shouldn't technically get me into any disciplinary trouble with Fifa.

Yes, there was. Mihajlovic made racist remarks to Vieira and was suspended. Poulsen made non-racist remarks to Totti and wasn't suspended. The system works. But then you know what Fifa is like, every once in a while they want to change something, make a statement. Without paying much attention to consistency and implications. That's Fifa in a nutshell, why are you surprised?

Well that would be utterly psychotic for starters :D

You know, I've had the Milanese dish of cavallo, where they assured my wife that it was a delicacy of "a local animal".

But I draw the line on the testicles of a douche bag.

I guess I'm one of the few that doesn't mind eating horse. I think it's quite tasty. Great how they presented it as a local animal though :D.

It's a rather dark meat. Add a little of the local gravy, and I didn't think it was so bad. Maybe not as tasty as kangaroo, but still pretty decent.

Now Matrix's testacles are another thing entirely... :scared:

Kangaroo is indeed tasty.

You just got to love Dr. Phil. This time he was trying to tell some 13 year old that getting pregnant probably isn't the best thing to do at 13. She was all like "watcha talkin 'bout? My boy is gonna take like total care of the baby." and then he was all like "Is it true that your boyfriend got arrested for dealing drugs and is now in jail?" and then she was like "well yeah." and then he said "well, then his already questionable fatherhood skills just went completely down the drain." to which her response was "but everyone's doing it all over the place here.". This last comment made it seem as if the oracle of Delphi was reborn.

That said the girl was obviously retarded. I'm sure that if you find long enough you'll be able to track someone down who has an IQ of 65 is 13 and is screwing around because she can't find anything better to do. She must have rolled her eyes 250 times during the show and didn't succeed once in doing it the right way.

Her sister had three children from three different men, so I kind of started wondering if the parents shouldn't at least be partially blamed as well :D.
Anyway, I always love it when big old Phil finds another circus freak. Too bad he's not really the caring man people think he is. He's just plain old evil :D.

Oh dear, now I'm supposedly a racist just because I don't like Lilian Thuram.
It was a rather unclassy thread, Andy. That said you're obviously not racist.

Well, you actually could be I don't know, but not liking one guy with an African origin doesn't make you racist.
