To make it more clear, until now 16 teams qualified directly for CL.
The champions and the 2nd placed from the top 6 countries from UEFA rankings, and the champions of the countries placed from 7-10 (or if the title holder didn't qualify to group stages through the league, then the 10th placed country is losing the CL group spot)
With an example :
Title Holder (1 team)
1. England (2 teams , the champion and the runner up)
2. Spain (2 teams , the champion and the runner up)
3. Italy (2 teams , the champion and the runner up)
4. France (2 teams , the champion and the runner up)
5. Germany (2 teams , the champion and the runner up)
6. Portugal (2 teams , the champion and the runner up)
7. Russia ( 1 team, the champion)
8. The Netherlands ( 1 team, the champion)
9. Romania ( 1 team, the champion)
TOTAL: 16 teams
From next season it will be different, because 22 teams will qualify directly to CL (instead of 16 as it was until now)
The champion, the second placed and the third placed team from countries placed from 1-3, the champion and the runner up from the countries placed from 4-6, and the champions of the countries placed from 7-12
Again with an example
Title holder (1 team)
1. England (3 teams , the champion, the runner up and the 3rd placed)
2. Spain (3 teams , the champion, the runner up and the 3rd placed)
3. Italy (3 teams , the champion, the runner up and the 3rd placed)
4. France (2 teams , the champion ,the runner up)
5. Germany (2 teams , the champion and the runner up)
6. Portugal (2 teams , the champion and the runner up)

11. Czech Republic (1 team, the champion)
12. Belgium ( 1 team, the champion)
Total: 22 teams
