What if you're one of the ones that acted the fool by being a legitimate business person and paying for your license only to discover that you're simultaneously being undercut by newcomers to the market that don't require what you honestly paid into the system?

I get the convenience of the customer. But it also puts a spotlight on how corrupt the taxi licensing business is and how much of a scam it can be for funding local governments.

Yeah, basically we have this goofy electoral college business. People pretty much vote with their voting public -- that hasn't been a real crisis before. But what does come up is that weird concession between the power of populations, regardless of location, and the power of individual states. Rather than a global vote count, there's an element of representation -- not entirely unlike how the FIFA president gets elected. Though not as many bribes have been made there to my knowledge. :D

Montana has a population of just over 1mil, Wyoming 584k. Why do they both get 3 electors? Why doesn't Montana more electors according to the population? 6 Wyoming voters have the power of 10 Montana voters

Afaik the license itself costs nothing from the state. It's just limited in number. It's when the taxi unions resell it, that the license becomes expensive.

Uber (and Uber like services) are very popular here. The difference is that regular taxi drivers saw the market reaction and decided to drive for Uber here, rather than charge three folds and drive by themselves. Their net income generally increases by 4-5 times. Very convenient for the customers as well.
