All of the above is irrelevant to both the subject i was discussing, namely some states needing bailouts, and my later point about the Texas vs California migration destination, where i clearly stated none of these numbers matter.

Fair enough. But my point here was that migration numbers aren’t really the only indicator of a failed/successful state.

It is obviously a very personal choice, and one that can be skewed with added incentives, i personally wouldn't want to live in California but if the right opportunity knocks who knows. Also i do believe over time people movement is a pretty good indicator, a good example would be the east/west berlin border.

Agreed, and the other factors do include weather, environmental, and natural beauty, factors which often favour the west coast (or Florida and Arizona). Here in Canada, BC gets all the retirees with money, because it’s the most desirable place to live in the country if you can afford it, in large part due to natural advantages. But it certainly pushes away the less wealthy, and young people who can’t find good paying work in this province due to lack of industry and more and more heavily limited natural resources jobs.

Personally, based on his past statements and actions I cannot see this as anything more than him trying to put on a show for political posturing. He specifically mentions sanctuary cities, for example. Whether you're in agreement with them or not, we all know how much his base froths at the mouth over that. As for taxes, I don't understand how a reduction in payroll taxes would help to close budgetary shortfalls.

tl;dr - No doubt many many are poorly run and need reform, I just don't trust that is his intention or he is capable to effectively do so.

Looking at that link...what does New Jersey actually do besides have Atlantic City and provide cheaper housing for New Yorkers?

Not sure how significant their numbers are, but NJ has a lot of engineering, and advanced manufacturing firms. In my area of work it’s probably easier to find a job in Jersey than NY.

I think there are two distinctions to be made here, one is state fiscal relationship vis a vis federal govt in the form of federal income tax. And the other is how fiscally responsible is the state(state tax, real estate tax...)and i think that's what Trump is referring to here, some states that are on the brink of insolvency, just check illinois bond rating, will seize this opportunity to address some of that deficit at the expense of states that have been fiscally responsible.

Yeah. Illinois is a dumpster fire. All their governors end up in prison, and the state is drowning in pension debt. Ironically, COVID-19 is one of the few things that could bail out the state if enough retirees on the public dole kick the bucket sooner.

I think for the vast majority of people (of course not all), it comes down to simply the question of "can I afford to live here?"

A piece of property that size in LA would probably be twice the price. But I've also heard of plenty of older Americans move south because taxes are lower and the weather is better.

I'd like to do more research regarding the age range of people migrating and to where, because I've found conflicting information about it during my study breaks thus far, but I think that could provide more clarity on it. Like you said though, it's a very personal choice.
