It's not an argument, it's a statement of fact. Higher education means much more likely to be on the left side of the political spectrum. How education relates to intelligence is another thing, and something that's almost impossible to quantify.
With regards to the second point, I said nothing about a professor being better than a businessman. It was only a statement about education levels and how they relate to politics. I spent several years in University and never finished a degree, I prefer working with my hands, creating, building, crafting, etc.
The republicans (conservatives in Canada too) have done a good job alienating the intellectual/academic class over the last 50 years by slowly moving further and further to the right.
