I don’t think that you understand the severity.

To give two simple examples, the EU committed to delivering 1,5m artillery shells to Ukraine. We simply can’t deliver them. No production, as far as I know we aren’t even half way trough after more than 6 months.

In regards to air defense, the situation is even worse. Coincidentally I was listening to a podcast of two former generals yesterday. So looking to purely The Netherlands (and it gets worse once you move to the west of Europe starting from the east), we aren’t capable of defending more than one city. So during a hypothetical war, they’ll have to decide protecting either Amsterdam or Rotterdam, ignoring to other big cities. I’m quite sure the situation is more or less the same for other EU countries. We depend on your help.

In regards to energy, I think that’s its more or less 50% that we import. Not even close to being independent, compare it to your countries situation.

Medicine as far as I know the number is even higher. As for production of general goods we already saw how quickly things got nasty during the pandemic

The war in Ukraine learned us that we shouldn’t depend on Russia for energy. One way or another we have to learn that we shouldn’t depend on the US for safety, I’m not saying that we should become enemies but it has to drastically change. For the production of other things, like medicine, I’m not even sure when or how things will change. And honestly I’m a bit fed up by this. To use a simple metaphor; it’s like building a nice house with great decoration but totally ignoring the foundation.

I totally understand what you're saying. But these are the sort of things you'd want planned and organized from within with less pressure. Having it thrust upon you by externalities can imo cause unforseen issues, and when it comes to national security this is not something you want.
