i think what you have to take into consideration is that it tapped into an uncharted movie genre, sure there were sci-fi movies at teh time but none that had the charisma of Star Wars. Lucas simply cherry picked the best things about every movie genre and amalgamated it into one sci-fi ball, there are elements of westerns in there, the great romance of medieval folklore and their Knights.....he basically riped off everything.e
but, as a child growing up i was taken to see Star Wars and Empire showing as a double matinée before Return of the Jedi came out. i was blown away by it, now i feel for my Mum because taking a young kid to sit through 4+ hours of science fiction must have seemed like a daunting prospect but i was glued to teh screen, it captured my imagination like nothing i had ever seen before.
obviously graphical effects have since made most of the processes used back then redundant and it will look dated to anyone just getting into the series, but if you just put your cynicism aside, regress back to a childlike mind and take it for what it is( a good old fashoined sci-fi romp) then there is so much to enjoy about the first 3 films
for a kid it must have been great, but what I don't get is the obsession a lot of people still have with it...these kids have grown up and still revere the series as if it was something so completely out of this world

Gonna watch "Cape Fear" soon.
The original or the Scorsese one?

A Mighty Heart - rather good movie. Interesting insight into the problem of kidnappings by muslim extremists. Good performances by pretty much everyone, even Angeline Jolie.

After that I had to go for something a little more lighthearted:

Zombie Strippers - the title says it all really :D. Very dumb movie, but quite funny at times. Too bad the novelty of it all wears off after about an hour or so, leaving you a bit uninterested at the proceedings.

The Brave One - not bad, definitely entertaining. Surprisingly convincing turn by Jodie Foster.

Just caught the end of V for Vendetta seen it god knows how many times had to study it for terrorism culture and identity last year. I really dont know what to think off it lol. Some of the acting is great, some is terrible, it ignores the original story so much that it might aswell be called something else. Some of the 'quotes'/scripting is brilliant and some is shameful, but i still find it weirdly alluring and enjoyable. About to finally get around to watching 'The Network'.
From what I had heard, it was reasonably faithful to Moore's graphic novel. I can't debate the point though, having never read it. Still, I'm inclined to try to judge adaptations on their own merits, as hard as that can be, particular if you are fond of the source material. What is the key difference between the two, in your opinion, and how does it alter the story for the worse?

Do you mean Network, the oscar winning movie? It's interesting. It's aged a little as a film, but it remains relevant.

I watched The Driver the other night. It's a real gem of a thriller. Superb car chases, taut dialogue, and a simple (but not stupid) plot.

I also finally got around to seeing The Princess Bride, the origin of such quotes as, "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means," "My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die," and, "Never get involved in a land war in Asia." It's a very good fantasy movie, the earliest example I've seen of a kids movie smart enough to entertain adults.
