just finished watching bus 174. i thought it was a perfectly made documentary. it is a growing issue here in cairo in particular but its not that bad as it is in rio. u kind of understand both sides of the story and cant help but feel sorry for both of them.
conclusion after watching city of god, tropa de elite, and now bus 174 ----> brazil is just the worest place to be poor in!really harsh life for the kids specially.

Looking at the IMDB users rating for Tropa de Elite and Cidade de Deus I found this interesting:

Non-US users : 8.2/10

While the votes for City of God are pretty much uniform, there is a huge difference between the US and the Non-US users ratings for Elite Squad.
It's a bit like City of God gone reality television. I really liked it, but it was one of those documentaries that grew on me after watching it as I couldn't stop thinking about it.
The many slow motion angles of the footage they had were pretty amazing. And it tells an interesting story of class in Rio society.
The trouble with Brazil was that they had an immense youth population. I guess in some ways, Egypt has had many similar issues. And since the social systems could not effective support a country where the average age was once something ridiculously low like 18 (it's something like 33-34 in the U.S.), things found their own way of working (or not).
That's been on my list for a long time. Though less violent but amazingly acted, I cannot help but also recommend Central Station, aka Central do Brasil, among Brazilian movies of the past decade. Fernanda Montenegro is a fantastic actress.

that indeed is interesting hoori, although i cant really understand why there is a big gap between the ratings, i checked the ratings of G.I. Jane considering it resembles to a certain extent the core of elite squad ( how they train and eliminate the weak and corrupt soliders) but surprisingly its the opposite in ratings

i'll def look for central station, its quite amazing to watch movies from different parts of the world although in some rare cases its hard considering how difficult it is to find subtitles that are synce with the movie. on the positive side though u get to learn sooo much about different cultures and the different social problems which in the case of bus 174 are quite similar to ones i have in my community.
i'm not really sure of the precentage of youth forming the total population of people here swag but i know its the majority. the problem we have here which is very similar to the one in brazil is that these kids are born and rejected into the streets, it also occurs when families cant afford to raise them and these children have to start working at a very ripe age that could reach 6 years of age ( u should know that birth control among the un-educated portion of the population does'nt even exisit.) thats why recently alarms have been going on continuously about these children who r thrown in the street whith no family and no support. we have increasing rates of assault and thats what triggered me to relate to the movie bec i think if this problem is left un solved we will witness what happens on daily basis in rio over here.
i personally think this is the case in all third world countries and if a nation such as egypt wants to join the developing nations it has to seriously and effectively deal with these issues specially the ones concerning its youth who r after all the future of all nations every where in the world.

I hear ya. Another big issue is that even if young people get an education and try to strive to make a better life for themselves, so they can afford to get their own place and get married, etc., there's little hope of any useful jobs for them at the other end. That part really F's things up.

i dont mean to spoil bus 174 for people who still did'nt get to watch it but this issue was discussed the social worker who knew the boy and she had no answer, bec the boy really was looking for a job and he just happened to flip on the bus.
I've been trying to find a decent torrent for that for ages now. I'll look for it again, cheers
Also, look for Cidade dos Homens. A very good movie that is similar to City of God and Tropa de Elite.
