The story of The Wrestler has been told before. Raging Bull is probably the most famous one out there.

I don't think it's of any importance to have a new story no one has ever told. It's all about the way you tell your story. You might screw a noble idea while recounting it and you might on the other hand, make a masterpiece out of a cliched story.

I think you need to relax, man. No one is out to get you.

That being said, you have called me shallow twice now & I won't have it :andy2:

Seriously though, I don't watch movies to analyse them (at least not in depth), I watch movies because I enjoy doing so. It's a hobby for me.
If you think that the story "the Wrestler" depicts hasn't been told before, then that's fine by me. Just don't expect me to agree with that.
But you do have to admit that it's rather funny that the filmmakers admit to telling a clichéd story you've seen time and time again, while you are saying they don't.
If you are to believe todorov or propp, then there is only one narataive that any media text can use - Equilibrium - Equilibrium Broken - New Equilibrium Restored (which i believe) Or if you believe in Pudovkin then there are 7-9 naratives depending on your perspective. With that basis in mind and no other writing on the subject to suggest there are more then i generally ignore if someone is claiming that a narative is being overused, as by the laws suggested by the above theorists, that is unavoidable. I instead analyse the films against other criteria, in which the wrestler is one of the few quite original ideas going about in cinema. There are films like raging bull, rocky or the champion, but the wrestler brought something new to the table, the social commentary on performers in the 21st century. Does that make sense?

Kind of, I guess. I'm not going to agree with it though.
But let's drop the argument shall we? Especially since we both liked the movie in the first place.

I did enjoy Forrest Gump, maybe I'll give it a shot.

Oh and btw I have The Assassination of Jesse James at home but I still didn't watch the whole movie. It was a slow one and it killed me, I stopped after 1h or so.
