Let's not exaggerate now. The team clearly can play better football and achieve better results but it's not as straightforward as many fans think it is.
First thing first - annual overhauls have to stop. Hopefully we're already on that level financially to keep our best players from now on. It's inexcusable to have a revolution every Summer and then expect the coach to deliver CL in an instant. The coach needs quality but also stability to build something successful.
Second thing is actually related to Allegri as he has to adapt to the new squad. It's no longer built for the 352 because our midfield is no longer extraordinary. We've had an awesome midfield for yeas now, while the attack sucked balls. Now it's the opposite and there are changes to be made. For example Pjanic is no Pogba and that changes
a lot. To get the best out of Pjanic, you need to have players who move a lot. That way he can make use of his superb passing. In 352 attack is too often isolated and lacks movement. Add to that inadequate selection when it comes to wingbacks and he's forced to make back passes too often. Higuain is a fantastic striker, that many here undervalue due to the pricetag or 'choker' arguments but the bottom line is he requires service which he's not getting currently (and he still scores!).
Max has definitely to adjust, and look for other ideas. People who call him a coward or incompetent are going way too far but actually it's reasonable to keep asking questions over his choices which haven't been the bast lately (we've definitely seen better from him in the past). The fact is I wouldn't want to be in Allegri's shoes right now, because he's really got a headache, I'm sure of it. I hope he's still looking for a solution and sees the need for changes/readjustments.
For me the best solution in terms of tactics would be to go with some kind of 433 for various reasons. Since Pjanic and Higuain are our 'A' players now - that's actually two good reasons to look into this solution. Add to that Cuadrado and Pjaca who are actually good wingers for the formation and Mandzukic who's familiar with it as well. Evra and Licht don't have the engine for wingbacks anymore but in a 4-man defense they'd do very well since they are very good at defending. Dybala would be a false winger (RWF) I guess, because limiting him in any formation would be a crime. He loves that right side and it should be all his, but with ability to go anywhere he wants.
Overall 433 would allow our team to switch some responsibilities from midfield (which is worse than it used to be) to attack (which improved greatly). That would be me but hey, it's Max's problem as he's the one being paid millions for this shit
