I actually don't think Motta's positional sense is that bad, even if it certainly isn't good.

It's his decision making (whether to press a man or stand off him, whether to show him inside or outside, when to make a challenge) that is poor, and that is very basic stuff.

He also isn't aggressive enough. He was just running alongside Cassano at time when, at the very least, he should have been leaning into him to try and knoch him off balance and make things as hard as possible.
He doesn't look like a natural defender, basically. From what I had seen of him before he looked fine in that respect, obviously an attacking fullback, maybe he just needs to find the right balance. Of course, being a defender his mistakes get highlighted.

One of the CBs should have been marking Pozzi.

I disagree that Cassono's movement wasn't dangerous.

Lots of the goals he sets up come from that sort of move. He gets the ball on the left flank, moves inside a bit and then delivers a pass/cross to a dangeous position.

What Motta should have done was show Cassano down the line onto his left foot. Don't let him move inside on to his right foot and allow him time to look up and pick a pass.

Goals like that are tough to prevent.

You have to push out and clear the penalty area quickly, or you end up being under a lot of pressure with balls coming back in.

However, when a pass and run are as perfectly executed as that, there isn't much you can do.

It was an excellent goal from Samp's perspective. All Juve could have done was put pressure on Palombo, rather than allowing him time to look up and pick a pass.

It's pretty tough to mark Cassano in that situation, because the main priority has to be pushing up as a unit to avoid being penned back in the penalty area.
Thanks for the answer and it's great too, Red. Love your comment about the 2nd goal, now i admit it that it was classy goal.. But after your answer i look the 2nd goal as a prove that our team not gel yet.. That's why when the ball pass to Palombo, our players try to get out of our penalty area and cflosing down Palombo but that time our MC not closing him down fast enough to give pressure and our backline not quick enough to move forward and set offiside trap.. At least i noted there is Chiellini and DC left to make Cassano onside.. I wish our defense will be more stronger after they play together for several matches

The only thing Motta has going for him is that he is young and maybe he'll improve. But if he gets benched for Grygera I wouldn't be suprised or bothered.

I think you overlooked his nationality.

VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! i was shocked really with his zero attempt to stop Cassano or doing his defense duties with linkin' with bonucci but he even made him look bad.. i hope he can do well in the next games.. but some how i don't believe he is the fullback we want so u can add a RB to the LB to our transfer wish list.

On one of the goals he doesn't even put his foot out to stop the Cassano assist. He just stand out of his way. I don't really understand how he is a right back, that should be 2nd nature to any defender.
