Why do you need to compare Motta to Pepe. Until now, i say that Pepe performance for us is better than what Motta deliver for us.. If people always bash about DC awareness in defense, you can see it that in a match against Bari, Motta play worse than DC especially in defensive awareness aspect.. At least there is like 3 clear chances bari get from his part of play..
1. the one-two from Bari players that end with through ball in the first half so Bari player can get one on one with Storari, but Storari block the shoot
2. the goal line clearance by Chiellini, there is the long ball from the back and bari beat the offside trap which Motta made the offside trap failed
3. the chance that well blocked by DC. The chance begin at our right side. Their RW made a through pass on the the right to their striker and run to the center.. But Motta can mark and defend well enough against the likes of their RW or the striker
And if you saw the TIM cup against Milan you can also see that Ronaldinho goal is also Motta mistakes that stand too far forward and not spotted Ronaldinho far on his right.. And he seem doesn't interested to chase back and only Chiellini that make the effort and tackle
